Mey Selections Presents Royal Tweed To Duke and Duchess Of Rothesay
8th April 2008
The Mey Selections brand has now been enhanced by a special range of tweeds designed and manufactured by world leading textiles and cashmere producers, Johnstons of Elgin, and developed in conjunction with HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay.
Mey Selections Castle of Mey Estate Tweed was launched at the new Johnstons £1.5million Heritage Centre yesterday where it was received by TRH The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay during their visit where they viewed the weaving of the tweed in one of the only traditional mills left in the country.
Louise Sullivan, Senior Fabric Designer at Johnstons said, "Mey Selections is the brand name given to an initiative started by the Duke of Rothesay to give back fair-trade to North Highland producers. The main products in the range are premium quality beef and lamb and as a by-product we were provided with the fleeces of the sheep to spin into yarn and ultimately weave into tweed."
The Castle of Mey Tweed's are the Field in a Lovat colour for practical usage, and to complement this, the softer light grey House design - both inspired by the remote, unspoilt environment of the North Highlands and the coastal location of the Castle of Mey. These tweed designs are available in a range of sumptuous personal accessories including ladies and gents hats and bags, in addition to furniture and home furnishing items. Louise explained that there are plans to further develop the range.
The new tweeds epitomise the values of the Mey Selections brand in that they utilise the fleeces of sheep from the North Highlands and the local design and manufacturing skills of Johnstons. This not only guarantees the provenance and quality of the wool but promotes jobs and skills in the region thus supporting sustainable and long-term business growth for farmers and local people.
Encompassing elegance and practical usage, the Castle of Mey Tweeds will be available in an extensive range of accessories, furniture and furnishings and can be purchased at Johnston's shops and by mail order. The tweeds complement the Mey Selections range which includes honeys, conserves, whisky, biscuits, oatcakes and shortbread as well as premium beef, lamb and seafood sourced from within 100 miles of The Castle of Mey.
