East Caithness Community Facility reopening Saturdays

East Caithness Community Facility (ECCF) will be reopening on Saturdays from this weekend, High Life Highland (HLH) has revealed.   From Saturday (September 4) the Newton Road, Wick facility will be open from 10am until 12.30pm for public swimming and until 1.30pm for gym goers.

A letter has been sent to parents and guardians of pupils in S1 and S3 at Wick High School on Friday 27th August 2021.   Dear Parent or Guardian, We have identified a possible case of COVID-19 in a pupil in your child's year group.

University of the Highlands and Islands elects new rector

Dr Fiona McLean, a passionate advocate for the role of education in communities, has been elected as the University of the Highlands and Islands' sixth rector.  Dr McLean, who lives in Newtonmore, was selected by staff, students and community representatives.

Virtual school initiative gains national recognition

Three colleges in the University of the Highlands and Islands partnership have been recognised with a national award for their use of technology to deliver courses to secondary school pupils in remote and rural areas across the Highland Council region.   West Highland College UHI, North Highland College UHI and Inverness College UHI were named winners of the ‘Outstanding Use of Technology in Delivering Remote Teaching and Learning' Award at the Tes FE Awards on Friday 28 May 2021.

Carbon Planet: a journey into the science of peatlands - An online lecture

Professor Roxane Andersen's free, public seminar on 2nd of June - World Peatlands Day (at 4 pm).  The online talk will explore the science of peatlands, touching on subjects including climate change, biodiversity and restoration.

University forges new links with Icelandic community

The University of the Highlands and Islands has embarked on a new initiative to promote closer connections between communities in the Highlands and Islands and Iceland.  The university has signed an agreement with representatives from Múlaþing, a municipality in east Iceland.

Researchers trial assessing renewable energy sites with drones

Researchers in the north of Scotland and Wales are trialling a new method of measuring tidal currents which could revolutionise the marine renewables industry.  The project, led by scientists from the University of the Highlands and Islands, will use drones to film the movement of water then apply algorithms to determine its speed.

University Of Highland And Islands Is Ten Years Old

The University of the Highlands and Islands partnership is celebrating its tenth birthday today (Monday 1 February), the same day it welcomes its new Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Todd Walker.   Professor Todd Walker will join the university from Australia, where he has worked in multi-campus, regional universities for over 20 years.

High Life Highland swimming provision bounces back

High Life Highland is continuing its bounceback campaign with additional swimming provision planned during September and October.   Graeme Ross, Principal Facilities Manager said, "In getting our locations reopen, our priority was, and continues to be to make our premises safe and welcoming for customers and staff.

Educators To Address Attainment Gap With Equity Week

 Education specialists from across the North-east, North and West of Scotland are to deliver a week-long series of digital professional learning events for teachers and practitioners from the end of September as part of a drive to increase awareness about child poverty in Scotland and the impact this has on learning.   Led by the Northern Alliance (Regional lmprovement Collaborative for the area's eight local authorities) in collaboration with Education Scotland, Promoting Equity Week will run from Monday 28 September.

SQA Results In Highland - 5000 increases in grade across all schools

On Tuesday 11 August 2020, Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, announced in the Scottish Parliament a change to the way that SQA results would be decided.   In some cases, the moderation process carried out by the SQA during July and August had meant that candidates might be awarded a lower or higher grade than their teacher had estimated.

Principal of North Highland College UHI Announces Retirement in September

The Principal and Chief Executive of North Highland College UHI has announced his intention to the Board of Management to retire from his post on September 30th 2020.   Mr Donald MacBeath, a native to Caithness, has held a number of positions across the college, starting as a lecturer in the mid 1980's and progressing to Assistant Principal and Vice Principal before accepting his post as College Principal in June 2014.

SQA Results - Downgraded Results Scrapped; Qualifications To Be Based On Teacher Judgement

Pupils whose results were downgraded by the SQA are to receive new grades based solely on teacher estimates.   The SQA's alternative certification model was put in place after exams were cancelled due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

Education improvement in Highland exceeds national trends

The improving trend of attainment is continuing in Highland as demonstrated by the SQA results published today.   Attainment in Highland schools has risen against all key indicators and improvement is also around 2% above national levels of improvement.

North Highland College UHI - Corona Virus Update

Updates for students, staff and visitors Update March 17: North Highland College UHI is to suspend the delivery of face to face teaching from close of business today, Tuesday 17 March at 5pm, moving to the delivery of teaching and learning online to help reduce the risk of spread of coronavirus within our communities.  Students local course leaders will be in touch to explain how this will affect students directly and to communicate how they plan to continue teaching and assessment arrangements.

New Apprenticeship Hub to Support North Highland Communities

North Highland College UHI and Developing the Young Workforce North Highland (DYW) initiative, led by Caithness Chamber of Commerce, have signed a partnership agreement to formalise their new initiative, The Apprenticeship Hub.   The initiative aims to create a collaborative approach between North Highland College UHI and Developing the Young Workforce North Highland to support growth in the apprenticeship family to benefit the Caithness and Sutherland economy.
