Scottish Government Faces Major Medium- And Long-term Budget Challenges

New analysis by IFS researchers shows the stark funding challenges facing the Scottish Government, and the public services it is responsible for, over the next five years and beyond.   In the next two financial years, the budget for day-to-day non-benefit spending looks very tight.

Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 26 January 2023

DINGWALL, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd, (January 25 th ) sold 605 store cattle, 16 adult head of breeding cattle and 216 OTM cattle.   Bullocks (365) averaged 282.5p (+43p on the year) and sold to 338.0p per kg for a pen of 355kg Limousin crosses from Strone Farm, Banavie and £1,660 gross for a pen of 596kg Simmental crosses from Borlum, Scaniport.

Highland Council Rents To Increase By 4% for 23/24

After along debate today it was agreed to increase council house rent by 4%.   The 4% rise increase was agreed despite the fact it will result in less maintenance being carried on houses.

Boosting The Social Care Workforce - Campaign Aims To Help Fill Vacant Posts

A marketing campaign to support the recruitment of more adult social care workers has launched this week, to help address the high level of vacancies in the sector.   The campaign - titled ‘there is more to care than caring' - will raise awareness of the career opportunities available in adult social care and encourage people to apply.

Uk Annual Defence Procurement Worth More Than £2 Billion To Scotland

New figures today (Thursday January 26, 2023) show Ministry of Defence (MoD) expenditure with industry and commerce in Scotland in 2021/22 was £2.01 billion.   This is up from just under £2 billion the previous year and is the equivalent of £370 per person in Scotland.

Inverness Waste Transfer Station Completed

The Highland Council is pleased to announce the completion of a new ‘state of the art' Waste Transfer Station located on the former Longman Landfill Site in Inverness.   The new facility, which was built by Morrison Construction ahead of schedule, is a key addition to waste infrastructure facilities operated and managed by the Council and is an integral part of the long-term strategic waste management for the region.

ScotWind developers commit £900K to expand UHI schools STEM engagement programme.   Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced today (Wednesday 25 January 2023) that a University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) initiative which promotes careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) has received a £900,000 funding boost from the offshore wind industry.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (January 24th) sold 11 Prime Cattle.   Prime Bullocks (3) averaged 260.0p per kg (N/C) and sold to 261.0p per kg and £1,761.75 gross.

JCVI Advises An Autumn Covid-19 Vaccine Booster

JCVI makes interim recommendations to government on the COVID-19 vaccination programme for 2023.   In its interim advice to government on the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination programme for 2023, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that plans should be made for those at higher risk of severe COVID-19 to be offered a booster vaccination this autumn (2023).

First Light Fusion To Build Demonstration Facility At UKEAE's Culham Campus

UKAEA and First Light Fusion to construct a new facility to house First Light's new net energy gain demonstrator ("Machine 4") in Oxford, UK.   The agreement will see both parties developing the building at Culham Campus.

13% Quarterly Rise In Scottish Corporate Insolvencies

Accountancy in Bankruptsy (AiB) reveals corporate insolvencies jumped 13.3% in Q3 when compared to the previous quarter.   At the same time personal insolvencies saw a both quarterly and yearly fell.

23 Businesses To Fast Track With Accelerator Programme

Twenty-three businesses from the Highlands and Islands have started the latest edition of a four-month programme aimed at putting them on the fast track to success.  Pathfinder Accelerator is led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).  The programme provides fast-track training and mentoring for entrepreneurs looking to build a company or launch a new product.   The twelfth group to start on the programme since it began in 2018 met at the launch day at An Lòchran, Inverness Campus on 12 January.
