Every child and young person in Scotland is being encouraged to get involved in a National Discussion on education.   Let's Talk Scottish Education invites those aged three to 18 to share their ideas, views and experiences.

Call For Targeted Action On Soaring Energy Bills

The UK Government is being urged by the devolved governments to fund its cap on energy prices through a windfall tax, not higher borrowing.   In a joint letter to the new Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng, Deputy First Minister John Swinney is joined by Finance Ministers from Wales and Northern Ireland in calling for more targeted support to those impacted the most by the cost of living crisis.

The finalists of the Highlands & Islands Food & Drink Awards 2022 have been announced, as the Awards return after a two-year break.   The Awards, now in their 17th year, are delivered by a steering group, including John Scott (Fearn Farm), Marian Armitage (Shetland Food and Drink), Sam Faircliff (Cairngorm Brewery) and Douglas Hardie (Bad Girl Bakery).

Highlands And Islands Labour Ms Rhoda Grant Is Seeking Answers From The UK Government On Financial Support For Those Off Gas-grid

On the 8th September, the UK Government announced financial measures to help consumers with rising energy costs.  This included a discretionary fund for those who are not on standard gas/electricity contracts equivalent to the support available for those on gas-grid.

UNISON members at three Scottish universities will today (Tuesday 20 September 2022) walk out to protest against another imposed, below-inflation national pay award.  They also urge their employers, the Scottish Government and sector leaders to act to do more to protect the workforce from the cost of living crisis.

£150 Disability Cost Of Living Payments Begin This Month

From today (20 September 2022) around six million disabled people in the UK will start to receive their one-off £150 Disability Cost of Living payment.   Six million people who are paid certain disability benefits will begin to receive a one-off payment of £150 from today Payments are part of the government's wider £37 billion support package, including the Energy Price Guarantee and cost of living payments totalling £650 Those who had confirmed payment of their disability benefit for 25 May will receive the £150 automatically, with the vast majority to be paid by early October.

Overseas Travel And Tourism: May 2022 Provisional Results

There were 2.7 million visits to the UK by overseas visitors in May 2022; this compares with just 86,000 visits by air in May 2021 when there were some travel restrictions in place.   Overseas visitors' visits to the UK in May 2022 were significantly lower than pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic levels, down 21% from 3.4 million in May 2019.

Funeral Of The Queen - Times

The funeral is set to take place at 11am on Monday 19 September 2022 at Westminster Abbey, but the day will start long before then.   At 6.30am on the day of the funeral, the Queen's lying in state will end, and at 8am the doors of Westminster Abbey will open for the congregation to begin taking their seats.

Private Renters Have Lost Floor Space Equivalent To The Size Of Nottingham Over The Past 20 Years

Private renters' average floor space per person in England has fallen by 16 per cent over the past 20 years - floorspace collectively equivalent to the size of Nottingham - while rents as a share of income have remained stubbornly high, according to new Resolution Foundation research published on Saturday 17 September 2022.   The Foundation's latest Housing Outlook examines the state of the private rental sector amid the cost-of-living crisis, as well as the longer trends that have resulted in too many private rented properties today being high on cost, but low on space.

HMRC Releases More Details Making Tax Digital For Income Tax

HMRC has published more details on how Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) will work for buy-to-let landlords and sole traders with qualifying income over £10,000.   The new income tax framework for MTD for IT will be mandatory from 6 April 2024.

The following points are for the week ending 5 September 2022 for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.   The percentage of people testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) continued to decrease in England, trends were uncertain in Wales and Northern Ireland, and the percentage increased in Scotland.
