World Leading Fisheries Proposals

New measures to make Scotland a world-leader in managing fisheries stocks have been published for consultation.   Views on a draft future catching policy are being sought along with plans to roll-out Remote Electronic Monitoring systems for boats fishing in Scottish waters.

Scottish Economy Grows 1.3% In The Fourth Quarter Of 2021

The Chief Statistician has released statistics showing that the economy grew by 1.3% during the fourth quarter of 2021, covering the period October to December.   Change in gross domestic product (GDP) is the main indicator of economic growth.

Night-time Closure Of A9 At Inshes This Weekend 19 - 20 March

The A9 will be closed in both directions during the night this weekend (19/20 March) between the exit for Inverness Campus and Inshes, and the Raigmore interchange.   This is to allow access for a scheduled maintenance inspection of the ‘Golden Bridge'.

All Covid-19 Travel Restrictions Removed In The UK

The government will remove the remaining COVID-19 international travel restrictions for all passengers from 4am Friday 18 March.   from 4am 18 March no-one entering the UK will need to take tests or complete a passenger locator form.

Latest Scottish Suspected Drug Deaths Report - 1,295 deaths in 2021

The latest quarterly report on the number of suspected drug deaths during 2021 shows a fall of 8% (116) on the previous year.   The report on suspected drug death Management Information from Police Scotland shows there were 1,295 deaths between January and December 2021.

Wick High Closed At 11.35am Today Due To Heating System Failure

Pupils living in the town will be allowed to make their own way home from 11.35 onwards.  If there are any issues with pupils being received at home they are welcome to stay in the building until they can be picked up.

Homes For Ukraine Scheme Launches

UK individuals, charities, community groups and businesses can now record their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war through the government's new Homes for Ukraine scheme.   The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, has today (14 March 2022) launched a webpage for sponsors to record their interest, ahead of Phase One of the scheme opening for applications this Friday.

Children To Benefit From Changes To Child Maintenance Service

Children of separated parents are set to benefit from changes to the Child Maintenance Service announced today (14 March 2022) as new powers are revealed.   The new powers being introduced will expand the list of companies and organisations required to provide information to the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) which will help the service trace the paying parent, calculate maintenance and enforce arrears more effectively.

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published Scotland's Carbon Footprint: 1998-2018.  This publication provides estimates of Scotland's greenhouse gas emissions on a consumption basis; that is emissions that are associated with the spending of Scottish residents on goods and services, wherever in the world these emissions arise, together with emissions directly generated by Scottish households.

UK Armed Forces Join Largest Arctic Exercise In 30 Years

Six Royal Navy ships and 2,000 UK personnel have joined vessels and troops from 26 other nations for Exercise Cold Response off the shores of Norway.   Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales has taken its place at the centre of one of the most powerful naval task forces in the world at the start of the largest Arctic exercise for 30 years.

Scammers Targeting Self Assessment Customers, HMRC Warns

HMRC is warning customers to be on their guard as scammers target unsuspecting Self Assessment customers to try and steal money or personal information.   HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is warning Self Assessment customers to be on their guard following the Self Assessment deadline after more than 570,000 scams were reported to HMRC in the last year.
