A new intermediate waste store is being constructed at Dounreay.

The first concrete pour has taken place on a new waste store at Dounreay that will be needed for the closure of the site.   Dounreay awarded the contract to construct the new intermediate level waste store to GRAHAM Construction Ltd.

New patient accommodation at Raigmore officially opened

A new patient accommodation facility at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness was officially opened last week.   Loch Court is the second patient accommodation facility to be offered for the use of patients by NHS Highland.

People with a business idea that will benefit their local community or environment will soon have access to a new programme of support, being launched across the Highlands and Islands.   Known as the Social Start-Up School, the innovative programme will be delivering four locally focused initiatives.

Council's Capital Investment in Caithness

During the Caithness Committee on Tuesday 27 August 2019 Members had the opportunity to review progress of the capital programme for the area and scrutinise the amount of money spent to date.   The current year's capital investment allocation for projects in the Caithness area is £4,210,000.

Apply now for Community Transport grants

The Highland Council is now inviting applications for Community Transport grant funding, to cover the three-year period from April 2020 - March 2023.   The Council encourages both current grant recipients and new applicants to submit applications.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 27 August 2019

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (August, 27th) sold 15 prime cattle.   Prime Bullocks (2) averaged 205.4p (+2.4p) and sold to 210.0p per kg and £1,206.00 gross.

Transport Secretary fails to answer MSP's call for PSO on Wick routes

Transport Secretary, Michael Matheson, has failed to answer a Highlands and Islands MSP's call for consideration of a Public Service Obligation on Wick airline routes.   Labour MSP, David Stewart, wrote to Mr Matheson last month following concern from Caithness Chamber of Commerce and airline company Eastern Airways about the continued viability of airline services.

£3.4m For Tidal Energy

Scottish Government funding of £3.4 million has been awarded to help build the world's most powerful floating tidal turbine.   Scottish engineering company Orbital Marine Power (Orbital) has been awarded the money as the first recipient of the Scottish Government’s £10 million Saltire Tidal Energy Challenge Fund.

Best Start Grant Pays Out Nearly £13 Million

The new Best Start Grant package is putting more money in the pockets of low income families than the DWP system it replaced.   Since it started making Best Start Grant payments last December, Social Security Scotland has made more than 42,000 payments to families in Scotland, totalling £12.9 million.

Council Funded Advice services assist 22,000 customers, exceed £22.5 million in financial gains

In excess of 22,000 customers were assisted by the Council's Welfare Support Team and Citizens Advice during 2018/19 for support with welfare, debt and housing issues.  3,372 customers were helped by the Welfare Support Team and 18,777 clients were assisted by Citizens Advice.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Lamb Sales 22 August 2019

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (August, 22nd) sold 14,827 store lambs at their annual district sale to average £49.39 (-£1.52 on the year).   Cheviot wedder lambs (7,417) averaged £45.67 (-£2.22) and sold to £84.00 gross from 9 Lochussie, Dingwall.

Householders warned to be aware of bogus workmen

At this time of year many householders are thinking of their gardens, keeping them tidy or seeing to those jobs that need done before the weather turns.   This is also the same time of year for criminals to take advantage of this and prey on the unsuspecting.

Chromebook rollout prepares pupils for new era of digital learning

The Council has successfully distributed more than 20,000 Chromebook devices to all its schools to support learners to acquire key technology and life skills in facilitating a digitally enabled generation.   Based on the ICT in Learning Strategic Action Plan 2015, The Highland Council started the Chromebook Project in November 2017 where every pupil in P6-S6 will be allocated a Chromebook for their use in school and at home for educational purposes and P1-P5 pupils will have access to Chromebooks at school on a 1:5 ratio.

Members agree top priority for New Schools Investment Programme

Members have, at a special council meeting today, agreed a top priority for the Scottish Government New Schools Investment Programme bid.   Members agreed that the proposed Tain 3-18 Campus project is nominated as The Highland Council's priority for consideration by the Scottish Government for inclusion in the initial phase of the New Schools Investment Programme with a delivery timescale by the end of 2021.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (August, 21st) sold 81 store cattle and 65 adult head of breeding cattle.   Bullocks (37) averaged 198.0p and sold to 259.7p per kg for a 335kg Limousin cross and £920 gross for a 415kg Limousin cross both from Glenside, Glenurquhart.

Highland Placement Programme improves children's lives immeasurably

Considerable effort has been focussed on returning young people to Highland.   Since the Councils enhanced Placement Programme began in June 2018, 34 young people have returned to Highland or circumvented OOA (Out of Authority) avoiding costs of over £5M as compared with these young people remaining out of area for a year.

A Warm Highland Welcome For Probationer Teachers

One hundred and seventeen (117) probationer teachers were recently welcomed to Highland at an Induction course held at Millburn Academy in Inverness.   The probationer teachers' induction day is the first of a number of professional learning events throughout the year specifically arranged to support probationer teacher induction and their ongoing professional learning.

New Restrictions on construction and demolition waste at recycling centres

Measures to be put in place to cut down amount of construction and demolition waste collected at Household Waste Recycling Centres.   The Highland Council will be putting measures in place to restrict the amount of construction and demolition waste bought to its network of 21 Household Waste Recycling Centres.
