Criminal Justice Service ‘contributing to reduction in offending'

The work of The Highland Council's Criminal Justice Social Work Service has been praised by Members of the Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee.   Councillors were updated today (24 January 2019) on 3 key programmes being delivered by the Service and the impacts that this is having on persistent offenders, sex offenders, and domestic abuse perpetrators.

Scottish Water Supports New Tenant Farmers In Government Scheme

New farmers are being supported in developing their businesses by Scottish Water as part of a scheme to boost the rural economy.   And the first new tenant farmer has just taken up tenancy on land owned by the country's publicly-owned water utility.

Inverness Town House open to public

Inverness Town House will be open to the public on Saturday 9 February from 9am to 4pm to coincide with the Snowman Rally.   Locals and visitors are being invited to visit Inverness Town House and see for themselves the transformation of this public historic Grade A listed building following its award winning renovations.

Circular Economy - Fighting the throwaway culture

Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham has reiterated the Scottish Government's pledge to introduce a deposit return scheme as part of plans to further tackle plastic waste.   Deposit return will increase the quality of recycled materials collected in Scotland.

ORIC Appoints Executive Manager

The new Orkney Research and Innovation Campus (ORIC) in Stromness has appointed an executive manager following a recent recruitment campaign.   John McGlynn will be joining the organisation from Sustainable Marine Energy Ltd in Kirkwall where he was the company's head of commercial development.

More Homes For Scotland

The drive to increase the supply of affordable homes will be supported by £826 million through the 2019/20 Scottish Budget.   The funding will be made available through the Affordable Housing Supply Programme and is a £70 million increase on the current year.

Jurisdictional responses to the ‘Judicial Ways of Working' exercise

Message from Lord Burnett of Maldon, Lord Chief Justice and Sir Ernest Ryder, Senior President of Tribunals: During the course of last year, we embarked on a wide-ranging exercise to gather the view of judges, panel members and magistrates on aspects of the proposals which underline the modernisation and reform programme of our courts and tribunals.  We sought to bring to bear the insight and expertise of the judiciary as a whole in the design by HMCTS of the detail of the plans.

Planning Approval Sought For New Inverness Healthcare Centre

Planning permission is sought to construct a new healthcare and multidisciplinary life sciences centre to serve the Highlands and Islands area and is a collaborative project between NHS Highland, the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).   Councillors have been asked to give planning permission for a healthcare and life sciences innovation centre in Inverness.

Newton Rooms Learning Centres Underway In Highland

Newton Rooms are designed to encourage more young people into careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).   A network of the centres in Norway work with schools and local employers to provide inspirational STEM education in the most rural parts of the country.

Councillors agree house rent increase at 3%

The average weekly rent charged by The Highland Council to its 13,411 council house tenants is set to increase by 3% for the coming financial year 2019/20.   The average weekly rent will rise from £73.22 to £75.42 - an increase of £2.20 per week.

Thurso Santander Bank Branch Escapes Closure as 140 Branches Axed

Santander has today announced plans to reshape its branch network and close 140 branches in response to changes in how customers are choosing to carry out their banking.   Santander's future branch network will be made up of a combination of larger branches offering improved community facilities to support local businesses and customers, and smaller branches using the latest technology to offer customers more convenient access to banking services.

RECRUITMENT is to commence for a new hub in Highland to avoid children going to placements out with the Highland area.   The first hub for a new model of temporary residential provision and multi-agency assessment is in Fodderty in East Ross.

Council consults on further decriminalised parking enforcement

The Highland Council is seeking public opinion on Draft Traffic Regulation Orders for the further roll out of Decriminalised Parking Enforcement (DPE) across the Highlands in:Alness, Brora, Broadford, Dingwall, Dunvegan, Grantown On Spey, Invergordon, Inverness, Kyle of Lochalsh, Kyleakin, Mallaig, Nairn, Portree, Scrabster, Sligachan , Storr, Tain, Thurso, Ullapool and Wick.   The Draft Traffic Regulation Orders are available now on the council's website at www.highland.gov.uk/parking see ‘Traffic Order Consultations'.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 23 January 2019

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (January 23th) sold 647 store cattle, 49 adult head of breeding cattle 101 OTM cattle.   Bullocks (400) averaged 212.2p and sold to 263.8p per kilo for a 235kg British Blue cross from Shewglie Farmers, Glenurquhart, and £1,295 gross for a pen of 629kg Aberdeen Angus crosses from South Balkeith, Tain. Heifers (237) averaged 212.9p and sold to 243.5p per kilo for a pair of 310kg Limousin crosses from Wester Tomloan, Ardclach, and £1,185 gross for a 580kg Charolais cross from The Cloy, Fortrose.

NHS Highland Expands Video Consultations To Out-patient Appointments

More patients will have access to online outpatient services after NHS Highland gave the green light to expand the programme.   Patient's from two more hospitals will be able to attend appointments from the comfort of their own home thanks to specially staffed clinics using video-consulting technology.

STUC: Brassica Debacle Shows Employability Scheme Businesses Use Public Sector To 'launder' Unfair Work

This item from the Common Space web site will give anyone using employability scheme cause to think hard how they are used.   Workers denied pay they say is still owed to them after the collapse of the Dundee business Workers, many of whom were hired through a Council employability scheme, claim they are owed almost £8000 in unpaid wages and other payments from Brassica, which went into liquidation in 2018 One of Brassica's owners, Dr Rami Sarraf, is now opening a new venture on the same site called Brassica Ecosse.

UK Trade In Services By Partner Country: July To September 2018

A bulletin issued by the Office for National Statistics gives details exports in services July To September 2018.   The European Union remained the UK's largest trading partner for both exports and imports of services in Q3 2018, while the USA was the largest trading partner when considering individual countries.
