Justice Secretary Welcomes Appointment Of Police Chief

Cabinet Secretary for Justice Humza Yousaf has welcomed the appointment of a new Chief Constable for Police Scotland.   Iain Livingstone was appointed by the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) following an assessment process running over six weeks.

The latest publication of Quarterly National Accounts Scotland (QNAS) was announced today by Scotland's Chief Statistician.  This publication includes statistics for the first quarter of 2018 (January-March) including a revised estimate of GDP growth.

Weeks commencing 30th July and 6th August 2018.   Sutherland Spaceport: Greg Clark MP, the UK Government's Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) was in the north this week to visit the site of the proposed Spaceport in North Sutherland.

Consultation on Statement of Policy under the Gambling Act 2005

The Highland Licensing Board is now consulting on a proposed draft of its next Statement of Policy under the Gambling Act 2005 which, when finalised after consultation responses have been considered and any consequent amendments made, will become its policy statement for the period 2019-2022.   The Highland Licensing Board is required to publish, every three years, a statement of the principles that they propose to apply in exercising their functions under the Gambling Act 2005.

Still Time To Make That Career Change Into Secondary Education Teaching

The Highland Council is delighted to be working with the University of Dundee and the University of the Highlands and Islands to support Highland-based people who are interested in a career move to gain both their PGDE and complete their induction year within 18 months.   Following an earlier event in June, Highland Council and the University of Dundee and University of the Highlands and Islands are hosting a second information evening on Tuesday 14 August 2018 from 5:30pm - 7pm at the University of Highlands and Islands, Inverness College, Inverness Campus IV2 5NA.

Cost Pressures Rise To Highest Levels In Seven Years For Scottish Businesses

Royal Bank of Scotland & Fraser of Allander Institutes Scottish Business Monitor for Quarter 2 of 2018 Weakening sterling and the current global growth acceleration has helped fuel the country's economy during the first half of 2018, creating strong pickup in overseas businesses for Scotland’s exporters.   And the majority of companies across the country have experienced a pick up in activity during the last three months, with more expected during the remainder of the year.

Economy resilient but recruitment difficulties and pay settlements suggest workforce skills remain on top of business agenda.

The latest Scottish Chambers of Commerce's Quarterly Economic Indicator survey sees Scottish businesses displaying continued resilience, however, in an uncertain policy and business environment, the results show that expectations are weakening in some sectors.   Recruitment challenges have also been brought to the fore once again, as firms struggle to find the right skills.

The closure of The Original Factory Shop in Wick is the latest one to go in the county with Wick seeing the demise of the Homebase store also this week.   A closing down sale starts on Thursday 9th August 2018.

Young people across the Highlands are receiving their SQA exam results by text, e-mail or post today (7th August 2018).   Schools across The Highland Council area offered candidates the full range of national qualifications from National 2 right through to Advanced Higher.

Extending The Concessionary Travel Scheme

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity Michael Matheson has announced that the National Concessionary Travel Scheme will be extended to companions of eligible disabled children aged under five, which could result in over 3000 families and children additionally benefitting from the bus pass.   Additionally, Mr Matheson announced that the age of eligibility will not change for the National Concessionary Travel Scheme and that the options to provide free bus travel for Modern Apprentices will continue to be considered.

Scottish Welfare Fund Statistics

From when the Scottish Welfare Fund scheme began on 1 April 2013 until 31 March 2018, 296,520 individual households have received awards totalling £164.8 million.   Scotland's Chief Statistician today released statistics on the Scottish Welfare Fund covering the period from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2018.

Scottish Retail Sales Grow By 0.3% In 2018 Quarter 2

A National Statistics Publication for Scotland In 2018 Quarter 2, the quantity of retail sales in Scotland grew by 0.3 per cent compared to the previous quarter, according to statistics announced today by Scotland's Chief Statistician.   Over the year since 2017 Quarter 2, the quantity of retail sales has increased by 0.5%.

Week Commencing 23 July 2018 UK Vertical Launch Sutherland: Following last week's major announcements concerning the vertical satellite launch facility proposed for North Sutherland, it is good to see interest and comment continue to appear in the press.  I was particularly delighted to see the pieces in this week's local press with Caithness Chamber's Chief Executive Trudy Morris highlighting the work that has been put in from a number of CNSRP partners in attracting the opportunity to the north.
