Sugar Tax on Fizzy Drinks Starts Today 6 April 2018

George Osborne chancellor of the exchequer announced the Sugar Tax on fizzy drinks in the 2016 budget and it comes into force today.   Soft drinks companies will pay a levy on drinks with added sugar from April 2018.

Local Government in Scotland - Performance and Challenges 2018

Finding savings is now "increasingly critical" for councils dealing with ongoing reductions in funding, says the Accounts Commission.   Councils are balancing a real terms funding cut of 9.6 per cent over the last eight years with increasing demand, particularly from a growing older population.

Annual inspection of Stromeferry rock face

The annual inspection of the The annual inspection of the rock face adjacent to the Stromeferry Bypass which is part of the A890 route along the south shore of Loch Carron, will begin on Monday 16 April.   Geotechnical Engineers from AECOM will undertake the inspection with the assistance of rope access contractor Geo-Rope Ltd.

B851 part-day road closures - new dates

Motorists are being advised by The Highland Council that there will be part-day road closures of the B851 on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th April from 9am to 3pm at Farr Primary School (south of Inverness).   The two rescheduled part-day road closures (which were previously postponed due to bad weather) are required at Farr Primary School to carry out essential carriageway surfacing works.

Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 4 April 2018

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (April, 4th) sold 755 Aberdeen Angus, native bred and continental store cattle in a special show and sale and 15 OTM cattle.   Aberdeen Angus bullocks (290) averaged 240.7p and sold to 268.6p per kilo for a 376kg Aberdeen Angus cross from North Calder, Halkirk and £1,440 gross for a 640kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Lochdhu, Nairn.

Increased allowance and new changes to Welfare Foods Scheme

Low-income families with young children will receive increased payments, digital smartcards and access to a wider range of foods, under new proposals.   The Scottish Government is consulting on plans to reshape the Welfare Foods Scheme, which aims to help families access a healthy diet.

School lets - price changes introduced in Highland

Highland Council has reviewed prices for letting school facilities and has introduced some changes from 1 April 2018.  These changes reflect increasing costs and harmonising prices with High Life Highland in line with Council policy.

Help to Buy (Scotland) scheme will be extended

The Help to Buy (Scotland) scheme will be extended beyond 2019, helping more people purchase a new-build home without the need for a large deposit.   From April 2019, a further £100 million will be invested over two years, helping up to 4,000 households to purchase a new home.

£33m investment by Aggreko in research and development

Scottish Government support is enabling the world's leading supplier of mobile power generators to develop lower carbon solutions - and increase its Scottish workforce.   Scottish Enterprise have awarded Aggreko UK a £1.5 million research and development (R&D) grant for three projects, which will see the company invest £33 million in its Dumbarton facility and create 23 new jobs.

Scottish Economy Grows But Lags Behind Uk Average

The Scottish economy grew by 0.3% during the fourth quarter of 2017, according to statistics announced today by Scotland's Chief Statistician.   Change in gross domestic product (GDP) is the main indicator of economic growth in Scotland.

Week Commencing 26th March 2018 Energy & Business services: As progress continues with the onshore and offshore construction of the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm, news comes this week that the other offshore wind development in the Moray Firth has seen a change to its consortium of ownership.  A 33.4% stake in the Moray East project has been taken by Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan, bringing them on board with existing shareholders EDPR and Engie.

Publicly-owned And Ethical: 'transformative' Scottish National Investment Bank Moves Ahead

THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT will proceed with the establishment of a Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB), which will be operating "in shadow form" by 2019, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced.   Sturgeon confirmed the Scottish Government's commitment to the SNIB, first announced at the SNP's autumn conference in 2017, at the offices of Morton Fraser law firm in Edinburgh, following the official publication of an implementation plan for the SNIB by Tesco Bank CEO Benny Higgins and his advisory group.
