DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (March, 29th) sold 68 prime cattle.  Prime bullocks (30) averaged 169.5p (+3.5p) and sold to 180p per kg and £1,195.40 gross.

Apprentice Day For Highland Youth Voice Members

The Highland Youth Voice Apprentice Day is running for the 6th time on Wednesday, 30th March with 14 young people aged 15-17 from Lochaber, Nairn, Wick, Fortrose, Dingwall, Kingussie and the Inverness area taking part.   Highland Youth Voice, the elected Youth Parliament for the Highlands, holds an annual 'Apprentice Day' on which members of the Highland Youth Voice shadow Senior Managers.

Taxi Fare Review In Highland

•Public Notice - Revised Taxi Fares The public is being asked for its views on proposals by The Highland Council to revise the scale of maximum taxi fares in the Highlands.  The public have until Friday 22 April to respond.

Dounreay Dome Paint Job Scrapped

Bosses at Dounreay agreed that they won't now be spending £500,000 on a repaint of the sphere.   They money saved will go instead towards actual decommissioning work.

New Vaults Signal Start Of Waste Clearance

The clearance of tens of thousands of tonnes of radioactive waste from the redundant nuclear site at Dounreay today moved a step closer.   Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd announced the formal award of a contract to develop a disposal site for low-level waste from the decommissioning and closure of the site.

Clean-up Reveals 6000 Years Of Human History

Getting rid of Britain's 20th century experiment with fast breeder nuclear reactors is illuminating the history of human settlement on Scotland's north coast stretching back 6000 years.   Archaeologists hired as part of the closure of the nuclear site at Dounreay have pieced together the legacy left by previous generations who occupied the site as long ago as 4000BC.

New Report Lists Radioactive Wastes At Dounreay

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has published the latest edition of the UK's radioactive waste inventory.   This sets out the type and volumes of radioactive waste at sites such as Dounreay, as of April 1, 2010.

Nuclear Shutdown Cash Boost For School Skills

Cash from the closure of the fast reactor site at Dounreay is set to breed a new generation of engineers and scientists in the Scottish Highlands.   The money from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority will fund half the cost of a £50,000 project to increase the number of school-leavers skilled in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Caithness Projects Get Share Of Climate Challenge Money

Climate Challenge projects share £8m Caithness projects were among the successful applicants for funds from the Climate Change challenge funding programme.   Latheron Lybster and Clyth Community Development Company - £44,345 Dunnet Forestry Trust - £26,613 130 projects have been announced as the latest community initiatives to receive awards totalling over £8 million from the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF).

Regeneration Partnership Update 21 March 2011

Business Services: I will be coordinating a meeting this week with representatives from the Pensions Administration Office to update local stakeholders on plans to move the PAO's base from Thurso to the Forss Business & Technology Park.  The work done by staff at the PAO is a good example of the type of high-quality employment we would like to encourage as part of the economic transition process taking place over the coming months and years.

2011 Highland Ranger Guided Walks And Events Programme

A programme of over 350 guided walks and events has been published by The Highland Council's Countryside Rangers in conjunction with New Century Publications Group.   Councillor Ian Ross, Chairman of The Highland Council's Planning, Environment and Development Committee said: "The 2011 programme runs from April through to the end of the summer with events taking place throughout the Highlands.

A book recording the achievements of Scotland's Housing Expo at Balvonie Braes, Inverness, has now been published in hard copy and electronic formats.   The book illustrates and explains the buildings, masterplanning and landscaping showcased by the Expo, the background to the event and what has been learnt from it so far.

Twelve ambitious Highlands and Islands companies will be pursuing new business after taking part in specialist training to create their own international action plans.   The businesses explored how best to identify the most likely international markets for their products, how best to break into these markets, how to improve their e-commerce, and how to manage international contracts.

Gibson welcomes Flow's latest

Rob Gibson SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands* has warmly welcomed the news that the Flow Country has made it on UK shortlist to bid for world heritage status.   Europe's largest blanket bog, which has been described as the Northern hemisphere's answer to the Amazon rain forest, because of it's capacity to store large amounts of carbon, has made it to the short list with two other Scottish sites (the forth rail bridge and iron age remains in Shetland).

Funding for Scrabster Harbour

The redevelopment of Scrabster Harbour received a funding injection.   Finance Secretary John Swinney announced that the Scottish Government will contribute £2.2 million to help complete a funding package of around £20 million for the project.

A new booklet entitled "Nature Detectives… The Challenge" was launched at South Lodge Primary School, Invergordon today (Tuesday 22 March).   The booklet aims to help children find out more about the wildlife that lives on their very own doorstep in an active and hands-on fashion.

New offshore wind base in Scotland

First Minister Alex Salmond today announced plans by energy engineering giant Doosan Power Systems to locate its renewables research and development (R&D) base - and potentially offshore wind turbine manufacturing - in Scotland, creating hundreds of new jobs with investments worth up to £170 million over the next ten years.   Doosan and Scottish Enterprise have agreed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
