Dounreay Fire Engine Donated To Caithness Group

A unique fire engine specially made to tackle radioactive metal fires at Dounreay has been saved from the scrap heap, thanks to a group of local vehicle enthusiasts.   Dounreay's heritage officer James Gunn contacted the local Caithness & Sutherland vintage vehicle club to see whether they were interested in acquiring a piece of Dounreay's history.

STV NORTH GETS SWITCHED ON TO SWITCHOVER HELP SCHEME

More than 190,000 older and disabled people in the STV North region are entitled to practical help to switch over to digital television.   Today the BBC-run Switchover Help Scheme launches a television and print advertising campaign to raise awareness of the help available to older and disabled people so they can continue to watch their favourite television programmes after switchover.

ASDA To Submit Detailed Planning Application For Inverness

ASDA has announced that it will be submitting a new detailed application for its proposed store in Slackbuie, Inverness.   The supermarket submitted a notice to The Highland Council to confirm its intention last week.

Robert Gordon University hosts Open Day 2009

Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, named the top new university in the UK by The Times Good University Guide 2010, will open its doors to potential students and their friends and families for the first of its two Open Days on Wednesday 7 October 2009.   The ever-popular event will be held from 10am till 3pm at both the Garthdee and city centre campuses, and promises to be bigger and better than ever before with a huge range of activities and information on offer.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (October, 2nd) sold 8,634 store lambs including 1,060 sheep on behalf of Lewis Livestock Producers.  Lambs (8,585) averaged £44.38 and sold to £62.50 gross for Texel crosses from Inver Croft, Tain.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (October, 1st) sold 5,207 breeding and store sheep.   Gimmers (518) averaged £90.12 and sold to £195 gross for Texels from Grantfield Farm, Tain and £128 gross for Cheviots from Greenacres, Delny.

Council Leader Confirms Commitment To Wick High School

The Leader of The Highland Council's Administration Councillor Michael Foxley has urged the Wick High School Parent Council to work with the Council and the Scottish Government to deliver a significant investment at the school.   He said: "This is a time for celebration that Wick High School is going to benefit from a very significant investment.

Camera Team To Probe Underground Waste

A decommissioning team is getting ready to look inside an underground bunker where intermediate-level radioactive waste has lain submerged in water for almost 40 years.   Two remotely-operated cameras will penetrate the concrete-lined vault in preparation for work starting to clean out its hazardous contents.

Dounreay Is Platform For Scots Clean-up Expertise

Scottish companies are marketing their expertise in nuclear decommissioning to delegates from seven countries that are in Scotland to learn how the country is dismantling its nuclear heritage.   The visit is being seen as an opportunity for companies in Scotland to gain a bigger share of a global market worth hundreds of billions over the next few decades.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 29th) sold 62 prime cattle.  Prime bullocks (26) averaged 169.8p (-0.9p) and sold to 179p per kg and £1,209.30 gross.

Wick High To Be Part Of £1.25bn Building Programme

BUILDING BETTER SCHOOLS ACROSS SCOTLAND Over 12,000 pupils across Scotland will be lifted out of poor condition schools following announcement of the first 14 secondary schools to benefit from the £1.25bn school building programme.   Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop made the announcement today as she visited one of the schools to benefit, Lasswade High in Midlothian, before officially opening the new Armadale Academy.

Thurso Glassblower Ian Pearson Steps Down

Thurso Glassblower, Ian Pearson recently stepped down as Chairman of the British Society of Scientific Glassblowers after holding the post for the last seven years.  He was the longest serving Chairman of the BSSG since its formation in 1960 and in recognition of this Ian was presented with Honorary membership of the Society.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd, (September 26th) sold 384 rams and females at its annual show and sale of Cheviot and Continental rams and females.  The overall show champion and winner of the Mountrich trophy was a Texel ram lamb from Ravensview, Strathpeffer, which realised £480 to Conon Brae Farms, Torgorm, Conon Bridge.

Technological First For Carbon Footprinting In Highlands and Islands

Highlands and Islands businesses are piloting an American web project widening access to carbon footprint analysis to small operators.   Measuring carbon footprint for goods and services has primarily only been affordable to major companies, but the new free website offers small businesses the chance to calculate the impact their activities are having on the environment.
