Sutherland Venue For Northern Sheep Event

Lamb grading, sheep health, production systems and easycare sheep are among the topics to be discussed at North Sheep an open day for the sheep industry which is due to be held on Thursday the 10th August 2006, at Kirkton Farm by Melvich, Sutherland, by the kind permission of Messers W Findlayon.   This free event which starts at 1.00pm has been organised by SAC and is supported by European Social Fund (ESF), Highlands and islands Enterprise (HIE), Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), Quality Meat Scotland (QMS).

Year Of Progress To Decommission Dounreay

The first annual report on progress to decommission the former experimental reactor site at Dounreay is published today.   Dounreay Review 2005/06 has been produced by UKAEA, the body carrying out the safe clean-up and dismantling of the 140-hectare site.

North Firm Wins £8M Contract From HIE

NORTH-based consultants Development Partners Ltd has won an £8m contract from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to manage the supply of advice to organisations over the next three-and-a-half-years.   The use of supply partnering for advice provision was introduced in 2003 and its success has led to another round of tendering for the next three-and-a-half year period.

DOUNREAY DIRECTOR TAKES TEMPORARY CHARGE OF UKAEA Following Dipesh Shah's decision not to seek a further term as chief executive of the UKAEA when his current three-year term ends in November, Norman Harrison, currently the director at Dounreay, has been appointed acting chief operating officer of the UKAEA.  While Dipesh Shah will remain as CEO for the balance of his appointment, Norman Harrison's role as acting chief operating officer will ensure continuity in the day-to-day running and performance of the organisation until a new CEO is appointed.

New Air Services For Western Isles

New Links for the Western Isles Sunday Services Introduced Air services to and from and within the Western Isles are to be further improved with the news announced today that Highland Airways is to directly link Benbecula with Inverness, and increase frequency on its Stornoway -Inverness services.   The enhancement includes the addition of a new lunchtime rotation between Inverness and Stornoway each weekday and a flight on Sundays to provide more comprehensive weekend travel options between the two centres.

Highlands And Islands Enterprise Seeks Help From Local Firms

Businesses and community organisations in the Highlands and Islands are being asked to help demonstrate that European Union funding has been properly invested.   The Highlands and Islands Enterprise network (HIE) is compiling evidence to show in detail the good use put to funding distributed under the EU's six-year Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme (HISTP).

Old Pulteney Enjoys A Fling At Mey Games

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky is delighted to once again support the famous Mey Games which will take place on 5 August at the Castle of Mey - a mere 20 miles from the distillery and Old Pulteney Visitor Centre in Wick.   During the Games, Old Pulteney will be providing whisky prizes for several key events and supplying some of its delicious 21 year old single malt for guests to enjoy in the VIP tent.

Euro MP Struan Stevenson Looks In On Dounreay

Pictured outside DFR during his first visit to Dounreay is Struan Stevenson, Conservative Euro MP (left) with Malcolm Clasper, Building Support Project Manager (right).   During his visit, Struan was given a guided tour of the Dounreay site and DFR.

Caithness Beef Group Get Up to Speed on Production Efficiency

The change in farm support away from direct headage payments means that livestock producers need to improve efficiencies in production and not rely on the single farm payment to prop up the business.   Learning new ideas and implementing these ideas is the way forward.

Sheep Dip Licences

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is receiving enquiries from farmers in relation to the marketing suspension of cypermethrin, also known as synthetic pyrethroid (SP), dip and is being asked whether charges still apply for them holding a licence to dispose of waste dip whilst these products cannot be sold.   SEPA's position is that the annual charges still apply.

Radio-active Particles In The Marine Environment

An independent report on the views of people in Caithness and north Sutherland about radioactive particles in the marine environment has been published.   The report summarises the feedback from more than 400 people who took part in a series of information-gathering events ahead of formal consultation later this year on the options for dealing with the particles.

A9 Is Putting Brake On Development Say Firms

OVER 60 per cent of businesses surveyed in the Highlands and Central Belt want the A9 road to be fully dualled between Inverness and Perth, according to a report commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).   The survey was carried out as part of a broad ranging research programme by HIE to determine the future transport investment priorities for the region - identifying the options that will best support long-term economic development.

UKAEA Submits Planning Application For New Waste Disposal Facility

A planning application for the construction of facilities for disposing of solid low level radioactive waste from decommissioning Dounreay has been submitted to the Highland Council.   UKAEA is seeking permission to construct a series of shallow engineered vaults adjacent to the existing nuclear licensed site, a grouting plant within the existing site and an administration block.
