The Vast Majority Of GPs Resisted The Founding Of The NHS - Here's Why

Securing the reluctant assent of general practitioners (GPs) was one of Labour health minister Nye Bevan's most difficult tasks in founding the NHS by July 5 1948.   The events behind this have been the subject of two new plays in the west end of London: one by Michael Sheen, the other by Lucy Kirkwood.

Protecting Gaelic Community Scheme Jobs - Additional Funding - A' dìon obraichean sgeama coimhearsnachd Gàidhlig

The Scottish Government is to provide additional funding to secure the jobs of 27 staff working for a Gaelic community scheme.   An initial payment of £175,000 will be provided to Gaelic development agency Bòrd na Gàidhlig to maintain the role of the community officers, who work to promote the Gaelic language and culture through local projects.

Hardworking Brits Backed By New Employment Protections

Parents and carers granted new and improved rights at work, covering leave entitlements and redundancy rules.   New legislation, including three Government backed cross party Acts, come into force today This comes alongside tax cuts of £900 a year for the average worker, an increase to the National Living Wage, and the introduction of free childcare for working parents Pregnant women and new parents will now receive special treatment in a redundancy situation, as a suite of new laws are introduced - delivering the Government's plan to support families and back hardworking Brits.

Ineffective Savings Accounts - Most Low Income People Do Not Benefit

Today 6 April 2024 marks the beginning of a new ISA (Individual Savings Account) year with savers able to squirrel away up to £20,000 over the next year, with the returns being completely tax free.  This is the Government's flagship policy to promote saving - with around 12 million adults benefiting in 2021-22.

Income Tax Changes From Today - People Urged To Check Their Tax Code As New Financial Year Begins

Progressive changes to Scottish income tax will raise valuable revenue for investing in public services, Deputy First Minister Shona Robison has said.   From Saturday (6 April 2024) a new Advanced income tax band will apply a 45% rate on annual income between £75,000 and £125,140.

Nearly £17 Million Of Drugs Seized By Royal Navy In The Caribbean Sea

HMS Trent recently seized drugs after making two interceptions while on patrol.   Royal Navy warship HMS Trent seized drugs with a street value of £16.7 million in two separate blows to drug runners in the Caribbean.

Proposals to modernise how Scotland's cattle are tagged, identified and traced is the focus of a new consultation launched on Thursday 4 April 2024.   Cattle farmers and businesses are encouraged to give their views on plans to fit all new-born cattle with electronic ear-tags.

New Laws To Cut Migration And Put British Workers First In Force

Changes that are now in force will slash migration and prevent the undercutting of British workers by employers looking to recruit cheap labour from overseas.   UK businesses are now required to pay overseas workers coming to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa significantly more, as the government clamps down on cut price foreign labour and continues to deliver on its commitment to drive down net migration.
