The Highland Council Is Ready For Winter

The Highland Council's winter maintenance programme starts on 14 October 2023 and the Council is ready to treat - according to its policy - the 6,766km of roads for which it has responsibility.   Chair of the Council's Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Ken Gowans said: "We have the supplies and resources in place to provide a winter service according to the Council's policy.

Communities and organisations are being invited to submit their proposals to become Scotland's next National Park.   A key commitment in the Bute House Agreement is to designate at least one new National Park in Scotland by 2026, to bring positive benefits for the environment and economy.

Healthcare Awareness Campaign Launched - Where To Go For Help Over Winter

An awareness campaign has been to launched to make sure people know the best place to go for healthcare over the winter.   Right Care Right Place has been rolled out earlier than in previous years to help Scots know which health setting is best for their medical concerns, and in turn to help alleviate pressures on the NHS and social care ahead of an expected increase in demand.

GDP monthly estimate UK - August 2023 - Growth of 0.2%

Monthly real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have grown by 0.2% in August 2023, following a fall of 0.6% in July 2023, revised down from a 0.5% fall in our previous publication.   Looking at the broader picture, GDP increased by 0.3% in the three months to August 2023, with growth in all sectors.

Reassuring Cereals Harvest In Scotland Predicted Despite Challenges

The Chief Statistician has today released first estimates of the 2023 Scottish harvest.   The figures predict that cereal production will remain in line with the ten-year average despite significant challenges during the year, including high input costs and poor weather condition.

Following the close of the withdrawal period today at 12 noon (Tuesday 10 October 2023), an election will be held for the 10 contested community councils across Highland.   The contested community councils are: Bettyhill, Strathnaver and Altnaharra Croy and Culloden Moor Dunvegan Glengarry Kiltearn Melvich Spean Bridge, Roy Bridge and Achnacarry Thurso Watten Wester Loch Ewe Ballot papers are being posted out second class on Tuesday 31 October 2023.

Only The Well-off Buy New Cars So Using Tax Revenues To Help Them Isn't Fair

It's not a justifiable use of public money to incentivise electric car purchase because the people who are buying them generally don't need the financial help to do so.  Buying a new car is an activity of people heavily concentrated at the top of the income spectrum, and it's an entirely voluntary thing to do.
