44,800 Customers Opt To Spread The Cost As Tax Deadline Looms

As the deadline to submit a Self Assessment tax returns looms, nearly 44,800 people have sorted their tax bills totalling almost £148 million, by setting up a payment plan.   More than 7.7 million Self Assessment customers have already filed their tax return for the 2022 to 2023 tax year, but HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reminding anyone who still needs to pay their tax bill should do so before the deadline on 31 January or risk facing a penalty.

Uk House Price Index For November 2023

The UK HPI shows house price changes for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.   The November data shows: on average, house prices have fallen -0.8% since October 2023 there has been an annual price fall of -2.1% which makes the average property in the UK valued at £285,000.

Innovation At The Heart Of The Scottish Economy - Funding of up to £8m per annum to support innovation centre

First Minister Humza Yousaf has announced long term funding to ensure innovation continues to grow and support Scotland's economy.   Annual funding of up to £8 million has been allocated to the Scottish Innovation Centres, delivered through the Scottish Funding Council (SFC).

Visitor Levy Legislation Passes First Stage

Bill to help councils invest in local tourism.   Legislation which would give councils the power to introduce a visitor levy to raise funding for local tourism facilities and services has passed its first vote in Parliament.

Launch Of New Access To Trades Initiative

The Highland Council's Employability Service and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) are delighted to announce an exciting collaboration to offer a pre-employability programme which seeks to support out-of-work young people on a pathway to the trades.   Supported through the Scottish Government's No One left Behind Employability Funding, the Access To Trades initiative will provide a pathway for young people up to the age of 29 years to progress on to the CITB's Scottish Academy for Construction Opportunities (SACO) Programme.

Consumer Price Inflation, UK - December 2023 - 5.2%

The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 4.2% in the 12 months to December 2023, the same rate as in November.   On a monthly basis, CPIH rose by 0.4% in December 2023, the same rate as in December 2022.

Thurso High School Closed on 17 January

There are no bus services running again tomorrow, Wed 17 Jan 2024, with further snow forecast.   Unfortunately the school will be shut again to pupils and staff; this is very disruptive to prelim exams and we will work to reallocate times as soon as we can to minimise stress to pupils.

The Department for Business and Trade launches the Critical Imports and Supply Chains Strategy, safeguarding UK supplies of critical goods such as medicines, minerals and semiconductors.   Imports of critical goods for the NHS and UK manufacturing to be protected from global supply chain shocks, safeguarding business and consumers and boosting the economy.

Wick High School Closed Again On 17 January

Unfortunately we have had to take the decision to once more close the school to staff and pupils tomorrow, Wednesday 17th January, due to heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions.   We will update you all tomorrow with our plans for Thursday 18th.

Pay Packets Have Barely Grown Since The Summer

Total pay growth fell for the fourth consecutive month, reflecting the fact that total private sector pay has been broadly flat since August, the Resolution Foundation said on Tuesday 16 January 2024 in response to the latest ONS labour market data.   Headline annual pay growth in the three months to November dropped to 6.6 per cent, largely reflecting strong pay growth in the first half of 2023, with shorter-term measures highlighting an even sharper recent fall in pay growth.

First Bump In Falling Inflation Road Arrives, As Tobacco And Air Fares Disrupt Pattern Of Faster Than Expected Inflation Drops

CPI inflation increased slightly in December to 4.0 per cent - driven by an increase in Tobacco Duty and rising air fares - though it remains below the Bank's forecast path, the Resolution Foundation said today (Wednesday 17 January 2024).   While the reasons for the rise were UK specific, the arrival of the first bump in the lower inflation road follows a similar pattern to that seen across the US, Germany and France with a surprise rise in inflation in December, with CPI inflation rising to 4.0 per cent.

Earnings And Employment From Pay As You Earn Real Time Information, Uk - January 2024

Early estimates for December 2023 indicate that the number of payrolled employees rose by 1.0% compared with December 2022, a rise of 306,000 employees.   This annual increase was largest in the health and social work sector, a rise of 203,000 employees.

Labour Market Overview, UK - January 2024 - Earnings Up 6.6%

In October to December 2023, the estimated number of vacancies in the UK fell by 49,000 on the quarter to 934,000.  Vacancies fell on the quarter for the 18th consecutive period, the longest consecutive run of quarterly falls ever recorded but still above pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic levels.
