UK announces new points-based immigration system
The new system takes effect from 1 January 2021.   Home Secretary Priti Patel will today (Wednesday 19 February 2020) launch a new points-based immigration system which will open up the UK to the brightest and the best from around the world.

World's first timing centre to protect UK from risk of satellite failure
The UK's emergency service responders and other critical services could be set for more resilient time systems through the world's first National Timing Centre here in the UK.   - - £36 million investment in new, world-first National Timing Centre to provide additional resilience to public services and the economy against the potential impact of satellite systems failure - - the centre will aim to provide accurate time to 999 responders and the energy grid without relying on satellite technologies a further £40 million will be invested in a new research programme, - - Quantum Technologies for Fundamental Physics, to help the UK lead the world in unlocking the benefits of quantum technologies.

Trades Services Framework Standstill Period Extended In Highland Council Area
The standstill period under the Council's Trades Services Framework agreement was due to close with effect from Monday 17th February 2020, with the intention of a proposed go live date with the new arrangements and contracts of 24th February.   The standstill period is a defined period of time between the notice of the contract award decision and the award of the contract.

£90 Million Uk Drive To Reduce Carbon Emissions
Households and businesses will benefit from £90 million to cut carbon emissions in industry and homes.   £90 million package announced to tackle emissions from homes and heavy industry - including funding for Europe's first hydrogen plants which could generate enough clean energy to heat over 200,000 homes £24 million for local energy projects set to reduce housing emissions by up to 80% and save consumers money on their energy bills.

The latest generation of small communications satellites could be launched into Earth orbit from the northern Highlands of Scotland within the next two years.   Development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has submitted a planning application for a vertical launch site, Space Hub Sutherland, that it plans to construct on the A' Mhoine peninsula, Melness, near Tongue.
