Natural Retreats have launched 'The Inn at John O'Groats' following the restoration of the iconic former John O'Groats Hotel, originally built in 1875, part of Natural Retreats' multi-million pound regeneration of this stunningly picturesque natural wilderness in Caithness in the North of Scotland.   Over the last two years the hotel has been carefully restored a new Norse style extension added which provides a dramatic splash of colour against the coastal landscape.

Energy/ Business Services: The Scottish Renewables Marine Conference took place in Inverness this week.  The event’s key announcement was the news of Scottish Government consent for Meygen Ltd to develop its proposed tidal stream site in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth.  
Caithness Business Fund Launched
A new Fund has been launched to assist small businesses with their business growth and development and promote the economic growth of Caithness and North Sutherland.  Caithness Business Fund was created after discussions between Caithness Chamber of Commerce and Baillie Wind Farm Ltd who had a vision to see a wider area of Caithness and North Sutherland benefit from local wind farms.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd, (September, 21st) sold 381 rams and females at its annual show and sale sponsored by Norvite.   The judge, Mr John Pirie, Chapelpark Farm, Kingussie, awarded the overall show champion and winner of the Mountrich trophy to a Texel shearling from Messrs D.

Council requests more time for rural fuel duty responses
The Leader of The Highland Council and Chairman of the Council’s Planning, Environment and Development Committee have written to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury to welcome the proposed extension of the rural fuel duty to the Highland mainland.  They have also highlighted the need to extend the deadline for submissions from operators to ensure none of the eligible filling stations miss out on the rebate.

Businesses invited to investigate online international selling
The second of two successful sets of free sessions to help businesses develop their websites to attract a wider market are coming up in Inverness and Forres.   The e-commerce sessions, developed as part of the Smart Exporter programme through Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), are being held in Eden Court on Monday (23 September) and in Horizon Scotland in Forres on 30 September.

A new collaborative centre, designed to host research and education and attract investment and jobs to the Highlands and Islands, is being discussed by two of the region’s foremost organisations.   Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) are proposing to build shared premises at Inverness Campus, the 215-acre site which HIE is developing as a location for business, learning and community activities in the east of the city.

Assessors At Wick Town Hall Still Open For Business During Rennovations
Assessor & ERO’s Office at 3A Bridge Street, Wick remains open for business as usual during the renovations at the Town Hall.   The works will take around 8 months to complete but the Assessor’s Office will be open as usual during office hours; 9am-1pm & 2-5pm Monday to Friday.

Council Leader highlights “staggering potential” of tidal energy project
Leader of The Highland Council Drew Hendry has spoken of the “staggering potential” of the largest tidal energy project in Europe which is planned off the shores of Caithness.  In welcoming guests at the Scottish Renewables Marine Conference at Eden Court, Inverness, on Monday evening, he focused on an announcement made earlier in the day by Scottish Government Energy Minister Fergus Ewing granting consent to MeyGen Ltd to “develop the largest tidal turbine array in Europe and the first commercial project off these shores”.

Highland Licensing Board - Extension to public consultation on overprovision policy statement
The Highland Licensing Board has included a third option to the current on-line consultation currently underway on the options for proposals for the Licensing Board's Overprovision Policy Statement 2013-16.   Launched at the start of this month, the consultation invites members of the public to have their say on whether there is an overprovision of licensed premises in any locality within the area of Highland Licensing Board.

New online business advice and information facility launched by Highland Trading Standards
Highland Council’s Trading Standards has today launched a new information website service specifically designed for Highland business and trade users.   Gordon Robb, Highland Trading Standards Manager explains: “We receive a considerable amount of calls to our free ‘Business Advice Line” service which covers the whole of the Highland area.  
Dounreay Test Alarms on Wednesday 18th September
An emergency exercise will be held at Dounreay on Wednesday 18th September 2013.  The Dounreay site alarm will be sounded to initiate the exercise and may sound again throughout the duration of the exercise.

The Inverness public is being advised that work will start in earnest from Monday 16 September on the construction of flood walls along the River Ness between the Ness Bridge and Friars Bridge.   Every attempt is being made to minimise disruption by maintaining at all times pedestrian access to shops and businesses, which will continue to trade as normal.

Police in Highlands and Islands report numbers detected during national seatbelt day of action.   Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division report that 33 people were found to be within vehicles without wearing a seatbelt during the national day of action, which ended yesterday morning.

Council holds Industry Day for potential ICT suppliers
Over 100 business representatives will be attending an ICT suppliers “Industry Day” hosted by The Highland Council in the Thistle Hotel, Inverness on Monday 16 September.   The council has arranged the event to provide information about how it will ensure the supply of ICT Services is continued when an existing contract comes to its end in March 2015.

The Highland Council is advising people that the car park immediately adjoining the former landfill site at Newtonhill in Caithness is to be closed in the interests of public safety, with visitors to be directed to the nearby Newtonhill Croft Community Woodland.   The landfill was operated by the former Caithness County and District Councils from the mid 1960s until its closure in the mid 1970s and was managed as a community woodland between 1996 and 2008, when the site was closed for reasons of public safety, due to the presence of substances in the soils including heavy metals, arsenic and asbestos.
