Energy Business Services:
The Scottish Government's recently-announced Transition Training Fund was established to help address the current labour market issues caused by the decline in the price of oil, and its knock-on effects on the economy. The Fund is to be managed by CNSRP partner Skills Development Scotland, and it's been useful to talk through with local SDS colleagues some of the early opportunities to help individuals affected. As further information on how the scheme works we will work with partners to ensure it is widely understood.
Ownership of the Wick District Heating Scheme has been taken over by Equitix, with backing from the Green Investment Bank. The deal is likely to mean a further expansion of the network, which already supplies more than 200 homes in Wick, as well as an innovative deal with neighbouring Pulteney Distillery.
Tourism, Food and Drink:
I was delighted to be invited this week to Venture North's launch event for the first in its series of three short films promoting the North Highlands. The first, which covers winter in the north, brings together the talents of Sinclair Aerial Surveys, Wild North Skies and Storyboard Films to produce a stunning look at what the north has to offer. You can view the film at https://vimeo.com/157219617 The initiative, which is supported by VisitScotland, SSE and CNSRP partner the NDA, attracted a range of local tourism businesses to Caithness Horizons in Thurso. The NDA's Financial Director David Batters was also in Caithness meeting local stakeholders, and was able to attend the Venture North event. Also being given significant coverage at the moment is a great short film about the north, filmed from the perspective of a surfer, showing the area in its full coldwater glory!. https://vimeo.com/155161483
Scrabster Harbour Trust is set to welcome a record number of cruise ships (and passengers) this year, with 12 vessels due to call at the port. The largest of these is the Oriana, which can hold nearly 2,000 passengers. Seven community projects are to benefit from over £80k of funding following the Caithness & North Sutherland Fund's latest grant awards. The second phase in a major upgrade of Scrabster Harbour in Caithness has secured up to £3m investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). The funding will enable the redevelopment of the existing St.
In April 2019 Peter Faccenda took over the role of Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership manager. He takes over from Eann Sinclair who was appointment as Caithness and Sutherland area manager for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
Weeks commencing 20th & 27th May Energy & Business Services: The Beatrice Offshore Windfarm project this week reached an output capacity of 587.9MW (its installed capacity is 588MW), which is the highest output from any renewable source in Scotland. And as the construction phase of the Beatrice Offshore project comes to an end it is good to see that offshore piling operations have begun for the Moray East offshore windfarm development.
SpaceHub Sutherland: The team continued with a programme of drop-in events on the ground around the area this week, running drop-in events at the Village Hall in Skerray and the Kinlochbervie Hotel. Week Commencing 29 April 2019. Energy & Business Services: As we see positive progress with the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm development, and the development of both Moray East and West projects, a new initiative to support supply chain companies to learn more about opportunities will be held in Thurso on 13th May.
Weeks commencing 8th-22nd April 2019. Energy & Business Services: It was good to see the announcement this week by Dounreay that its Decommissioning Services Framework had gone live.
Week Commencing 8th April 2019 Energy & Business Services: It was good to see this week in the Press & Journal's Energy Voice a piece confirming the transformational impact that the Beatrice Offshore project is having on Wick. It is a timely reminder that although the £2.6Bn project is nearing the end of its construction phase, the economic impacts in the north will continue over the lifetime of the project through the operations base in the restored harbourfront buildings in Wick, which will be home to around 90 workers.
