Big Lottery Fund (BIG) taking bookings for the information-sharing event scheduled to take place at the Town House in Inverness next Thursday.   BIG provides a wide range of funding opportunities and, at present, some 12 programmes are potentially available to groups in Highland.

Highland High School Eco Heating Makes Money For Council
A High School in the Highlands is seeing significant reductions in its heating bills thanks to the installation of a renewable heating system by Scotland's leading biomass company.   The biomass heating system at Lochaber High School in Fort William was installed by national biomass heat specialists HW Energy in March last year.

Drop them in it! - Scam Awareness at Eastgate Centre, Inverness
Throughout May, The Highland Council's Trading Standards officers are taking part in the 'Scamnesty 2012' national campaign in a bid to end the scourge of mass marketed scam mailings targeting UK consumers.  A focus of the campaign is to invite the public to hand over scam mailings to Trading Standards Officers and Highland consumers will get a chance to do this on Friday when officers take a presence at the Eastgate Centre, Inverness.  
Record Presence At International Energy Show From Highland
Largest ever regional presence for Highlands and Islands at international energy show.   The Highlands and Islands of Scotland will once again have the largest regional presence at the All Energy exhibition and conference in Aberdeen this week (Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th May 2012).

Mey Market on Tour
Mey Market have started their weekly Tuesday markets in Mey Hall but are branching out this year in an effort to reach more customers, either those who can't get to Mey on Tuesdays, or who just haven\'t got round to visiting the market yet.  Three "Awaydays" have been organised.

Highland Soil Biodiversity Festival
Soil experts brought 'up to the surface' This May, people in Highland will get an opportunity to take part in a true underground Festival.   The Highland Soil Biodiversity Festival comprises nine days of illustrated talks, field visits and guided walks to raise awareness of the importance of our soils and the biodiversity within it both to people and wildlife.  
Farm Watch Scheme In Caithness

The Highland Council is running a campaign to improve the quality of the garden waste collected at Recycling Centres and from the brown bin collection service.   The garden waste collected by the Council is turned into compost and is mainly used by farmers as a soil conditioner; some is also used for landfill restoration.

Norovirus Update 15th May - Caithness General
NHS Highland is again asking that members of the public restrict their visiting to two Highland hospitals and, in some cases, not visit at all if they, or a family member, have been affected by diarrhoea and vomiting.   Raigmore Hospital currently has two wards closed to admissions, Ward 2A and Ward 7C, with restricted visiting to each.

Open days for £110m Caithness wind farm proposal
The commmunity in and around Reay will have a second opportunity to see revised proposals for the Limekiln wind farm proposal at open days organised by green energy developers Infinergy next week.   The company is holding community open days at Reay Village Hall on Thursday 24th May and Friday 25th May, from 2pm to 8pm.

Wick Councillor Welcomes News Of South Road Works To Commence
Wick councillor Bill Fernie welcomed the news that Transerv will shortly start drainage and resurfacing works on the South Road in Wick.   Wick councillors have been complaining about the delays for some time in getting this road up to a decent standard.

500,000 Could Lose Disability Benefit
From Public Sector Executive Half a million people who currently receive disability living allowance (DLA) may be ineligible to get help under the replacement programme, personal independence payments (PIP).   The changes will help cut the annual cost of such payments by £2.24bn, according to work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith, who said far more people have been claiming under the current system than can possibly be explained by illness, sickness or disability.
