The Caithness & North Sutherland Fund has awarded over £65K at its latest grant assessment round. The funding has been granted to five community/voluntary groups towards projects that will benefit people living in the Caithness & North Sutherland area.

Chief Constable Sir Stephen House has approved the recommendation of the Armed Policing Monitoring Group that the national standing firearms authority should continue. In addition, having listened to concerns expressed by politicians and some members of the public and having assessed the current operational challenges faced by Police Scotland, the Chief Constable has directed that firearms officers attached to Armed Response Vehicles will now only be deployed to firearms incidents or where there is a threat to life.

Pre-qualification to find a contractor to build a new national nuclear archive in Wick has commenced, it has been announced. The total cost of the new archive is in the region of £17 million.
A quick and easy way to report fake goods online is being launched today (30 September 2014) by Highland Council's Trading Standards as part of their ongoing battle against product counterfeiting. Farmers are warned to be on their guard for lungworm this year. SRUC Veterinary Services is reporting that diagnostic submissions to its disease surveillance centres and feedback from farm animal veterinary surgeons across Scotland indicate a high number of recent cases.

SRUC's Veterinary Services has launched a new test for measuring levels of the essential trace element manganese in cows to help reduce long bone deformity (congenital chondrodystrophy) of their suckled calves. Long bone deformity in calves has been linked to manganese deficiency in the mother during pregnancy.

Retail sales volumes continued to grow solidly in the year to September, albeit at a slightly slower pace than in the previous month. The CBI's latest monthly Distributive Trades Survey of 123 respondents also showed that the volume of orders placed on suppliers in the retail sector grew strongly, and broadly in line with expectations.

Total membership of occupational pension schemes with two or more members was estimated to be 27.9 million in 2013, an increase of 300,000 compared with 2012. These estimates exclude participation in other workplace (group personal) pensions.
