DINGWALL., Dingwall and Highlands Marts Ltd (September 29th) sold 5,269 Breeding and store sheep
Breeding Ewes (3,931) averaged £70.82 (-£12.69 on the year) and sold to £185 gross for a pen of Cheviot Ewes from Birchbank, Knockan.
Feeding Ewes (595) averaged £57.11 (-£6.01 on the year) and sold to £124 gross for a pair of Texel Crosses from Lieuarry Mains, Thurso.
Gimmers (521) averaged £115.21 (+£1.88 on the year) and sold to £165 gross for a pen of Cheviots from Ose Farm, Struan.
Rams and Feeding Sheep (139) sold to £65.56 gross for a pen of Cheviot Rams from 3 Ardmore, Waternish.
Lambs (83) sold to £108 gross (+£30 on the year) for a pen of Zwartbles Crosses from Burnbank, Isle of Canna.
"There was a very mixed offering of breeding sheep forward at the annual Cheviot ewe sale. Many lots were showing effects of the wet summer in the west and coinciding with the dry summer in the south and a distinct lack of grass the leaner end proved harder to cash.
On the flipside the best-bred correct ewes with bone, length and a good skin met a firm enquiry throughout and were well short of buyer's requirements.
Gimmers also met a tremendous demand this year and the best end faced a major battle between buyers and many potential purchasers went home empty handed."
