"Dingwall Marts opening annual breeding sheep sale, which incorporates the Cheviot Mule show and sale of gimmers and ewe lambs was the main event in the north of Scotland today. The event which was kindly sponsored by Gow Transport and was expertly judged by Mr Frank, Rennieshill, Newmachar.
After much deliberating in the judging ring Mr Frank awarded the 1st Prize pen of cheviot mule gimmers to the regular consigners Heather and Willie Stewart, Newmore. This pen of Tillyminate bred sheep simply oozed quality in every department and were eventually knocked down to last years champion pen purchaser Mr Munro, Pitkerrie for £210.
Onwards to the Cheviot Mule ewe lamb section and out judges task became even harder as forward was the best show of ewe lambs ever witnessed in this centre. Class, Body and Character were evident in all vendors pens today. Back and forth, our judge paced up and down the alleys in the Mart as to where to place 1st Prize, which was awarded to another regular consigner Mr R McKenzie, Wester Craiglands, for his monstrous pen of 20 stonkers! Heather and Willie Stewart forked out £150 to replenish the stocks at Newmore Farm, with the hope of claiming the championship in the gimmer section next year.
Top price pen of ewe lambs however was achieved by first time consigners, Messrs Bradley, Tillyminate. The Aberdeenshire raiders assault on The Castle saw them acquire 3rd Prize in the pre-sale show. It was a battle of England V Scotland with Scotland coming out on top as Heather and Willie Stewart shelled out £195 for their Classie Lassies.
It was another Aberdeenshire raider who came out on top in the Texel cross section. Quite possibly the biggest and best sheep to have graced the ring at Dingwall were consigned by first time vendors W & J Brown, Hilton of Culsh, New Deer. It was their pen of 5 specially selected superstars which were knocked down at £275 per head. Next from this stable was a pen of 21 which realised £260 again for Texel crosses, closely followed by a pen of stunning Beltex crosses which cashed in at £235. Regular consigners Ballindalloch Home Farm closely followed in the pricing list. Their outstanding pen of Texel cross gimmers cashed in at £240.
On the whole an excellent trade was received for well bred and well grown stock. Many a potential purchaser went home emptyhanded or requiring more numbers. The cheviot mule lamb average increased by over £20 per head on the year and was one of the best shows ever witnessed here which is a credit to all our vendors."
