PORTREE., Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd., (September 18th) sold 1,491 Weaned calves and store cattle at their annual direct ballot sale.
The Judge Mr Colin Petrie, Upper Meft, awarded the champion to a 5-month-old 280kg Limousin cross Bullock from Mr A Banks, 2 Torvaig, Portree realising £1,100. The reserve from Mr N Morrison, 12 Portnalong, Carbost was a 9-month-old 340kg Limousin cross bullock selling for £1,100. The new prize for a native bred heifer, 12 month or under ‘The Sasaig Shield' was awarded to Mr D Macinnes, 4/5 Totescore for a 320kg Beef Shorthorn selling to Mr Macinnes, Sasaig for £1,000.
Weaned Bullocks (769) averaged 325.2p per kg and sold to 452.0p per for a pen of 115kg Limousin crosses from 7 Kingsburgh Snizort and £1,280 gross for a pen of 415kg Charolais crosses from 4/5 Totescore, Portree.
Store Bullocks (72) averaged 268.0p per kg and sold to 280.0p per kg for a pen of 245kg Limousin crosses from Meadle, Struan and £1,410 gross for a 520kg Limousin cross from 44 Borneskitaig, Kilmuir.
Weaned Heifers (584) averaged 302.9p per kg and sold to 440.0p per kg for a pen of 125kg Limousin crosses from 7 Kingsburgh, Snizort and £1,000 gross for the winner of the Sasaig Shield a 320kg Beef Shorthorn from 4/5 Totescore, Portree.
Store Heifers (54) averaged 264.3p per kg and sold to 331.0p per kg for a 260kg Limousin cross from Rowanbarn, Plockton and £1,210 gross for a 490kg Saler cross from 5 North Duntulm, Kilmuir.
Young Bulls (10) sold to 300.0p per kg for a Limousin cross from 1 Borrodale and £770 for a 280kg Limousin cross from Ose Farm, Struan.
