DINGWALL., Dingwall and Highlands Marts Ltd., (29th August) sold 2,475 breeding sheep also all classes of lambs and Lewis Livestock at its annual sale sponsored by Gow Transport.

"Dingwall and Highland Marts annual show and sale of Cheviot mule gimmers coinciding with the opening slae of breeding sheep attracted a large crowd from far and wide. The pre-sale show spectacle, once again kindly sponsored by Gow Transport. This year saw the gimmer judging proceedings in the hands of noted stock woman Jan Hamilton, The crossings. A fine array of pens of 20 gimmers were forward with the champion pen being awarded to Dingwall stalwarts Willie and Heather Stewart, Newmore. Last years 3 prize pen of 20 ewe lambs, bred by Messrs Bradley, Tillyminate went on to realise £270 per head to Mr Munro, Pitkerrie Farm who was making it a Hatrick of champion pen purchases.
Willie and Heather couldn't take to long in basking in the glory of another gimmer championship as this year they kindly agreed to judge the ewe lamb section. Long standing supporters and patrons of Dingwall it was our pleasure to have them judge as they have been with us right from the start of our cheviot mule sheep venture. A fantastic entry of twelve pens of 20 ewe lambs saw our judges cast their expert eye over them. It was the first pen of the day they saw however which was the pen to beat, the top pen from Messrs Bradley, Tillyminate who went all the way to claim there first championship in Dingwall, Beating off some fierce competition along the way. A pen oozing class in every department was later purchased by our judges after a ferocious frenzy of bidding as Scotland took on England for the second year running with the Scots coming out on top purchasing them for £235. The Tillyminate brigade saw their whole consignment of ewe lambs level at £202 per head which is a centre record. Overall a fantastic selection of Cheviot Mule sheep were on offer with the quality getting better year on year and are a real credit to the vendors hard work.
Aberdeenshire raiders and top stock men W & J Brown, Hilton of Culsh, New Deer, stormed the castle for the second year running. Bull dozing their way to the ring 21 of the finest texel cross gimmers to have ever graced our arena. Style, Body and superb skins were the 3 main traits these beauties behold. Bids flew from all corners however it was the Kinnahaird crew away up in the gods who were victorious in their quest. Not only purchasing the first pen for £310 they gobbled up the second pen of 21 for £300. The same stable ended their days trading with their 2 pens of Beltex cross gimmers cashing in at £265 and £250 to level at £292 for their days trading.
Topping the Scottish mule gimmers was Sandy Douglas, Achnamoine, as his Caithness consignment cashed in at £215 to Rhindhu Farms, Glenlivet. The Scottish mule ewe lambs were topped by first time consigners Glenavon Estate from the hills of Tomintoul. A superb pen of sheep which had colours to die for cashed in at £165 to Messrs Grant, Upper Blairnain, who couldn't let quality like this pass them by.
Cheviot mule gimmers (245) averaged £220 and sold to £270 gross from 1 Newmore, Muir of Ord.
Other breed gimmers (644) averaged £144.05 and sold to £310 gross for Texel crosses from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer.
Cheviot mule ewes (25) averaged £100 and sold to £120 gross from East Cowbeg Farm, Fraserburgh
Other breed ewes (289) averaged £99.89 and sold to £170 gross for a Blue Faced Leicester from Bella Croft, Arabella.
Cheviot mule ewe lambs (797) averaged £146.21 and sold to £235 from Tillyminate Farm, Gartly.
Other breed ewe lambs (329) averaged £109.02 and sold to £220 gross for a Blue Texel from Inverbay, Lower Arboll.
Feeding ewes (35) sold to £140 gross for a Texel cross from Chapelton Farm, Muir of Ord.
Rams (4) sold to £400 gross for a Blue Texel from Bella Croft, Arabella.
Store lambs (107) averaged £92.57 and sold to £133 gross for a pair of crosses from Easter Glackton, Gollanfield.
