Scottish nuclear site hails e-learning platform as ‘great example of industry collaboration’

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board’s (ECITB) award-winning e-learning platform has been hailed as a great example of industry collaboration in action.

To mark Learning at Work Week 2026, NRS Dounreay has highlighted how the ECITB’s Learning Experience Platform (LXP) has become a “go-to training solution” for its 1,400 workers.

The nuclear decommissioning site in north Scotland was one of the early adopters of the LXP when it was officially launched in January 2023 to provide free online courses to in-scope ECITB employers within the engineering construction industry (ECI).

Hundreds of workers have benefited over the last three years, with the organisation averaging between 300-400 e-learning course completions per month during this period.

Dounreay has also provided feedback along the way to ensure the LXP continues to meet the needs of industry, no matter the size of the organisation.
Learning and Development Specialist Rhona Gill, who will retire in September 2026 after almost 40 years at the business, works closely with the ECITB to ensure Dounreay gets maximum benefit from the LXP.

She said: “In my 39 years working here, it has been a pleasure collaborating with the ECITB to ensure all workers at Dounreay have the skills they need.

We’ve got a great relationship, which we really value.

“The LXP is a great example of this. At the early stages, we worked closely with the ECITB to trial things and offer opinions on courses we were using and what could work well to roll out for the rest of industry.

“We’ve been invested from the word go. With tens of thousands of course completions across industry each year, it’s been fantastic to see how much the platform has grown and what it has achieved like winning an industry award.

“As it has grown, we have been involved in trying out and providing feedback on new ECITB-built courses that are being developed to sit alongside the LXP’s off-the-shelf courses.

“Alongside this, it has been a collaborative approach in the way we use the platform day-to-day, with the LXP team now among the first people I go to when looking for a training solution.

“We have our own learning management system (LMS) at Dounreay, because security is so tight being a nuclear site, and the ECITB has been so flexible, accommodating and proactive in coming up with ideas on how it can make the LXP work for us.

“We are able to transfer the files onto our LMS and track learning on our own system so that training can be added to personnel records on site.

“With so many courses to choose from, the ECITB is constantly working with us to find the right content that works for us.”

‘Transformation through learning technology’

The LXP is accessible from any device, allows people to learn at their own pace and provides access to a wide range of resources, such as e-learning packages, video courses, webinars, podcasts and e-books.

Smaller companies, who have less capacity to manage their own online learning system, are able to join the ECITB Learn Academy and access content.

Employers with administrative resources can create their own online learning environment with a branded academy, while for bigger organisations like Dounreay that already have an established LMS, e-learning files are transferred.

The ECITB’s partnership with OpenSesame on its Learning Experience Platform (LXP) was recognised with the gold award at the Learning Technologies Awards for Best Digital Transformation Programme in November 2025.

The judges called it “an inspiring example of sector-wide transformation through learning technology,” recognising a clear business case, smart use of tech to drive large-scale change, and the reinvestment of savings into future skills development.
