DINGWALL, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd, (April 10th) sold 25 Young Farmers over-wintered cattle at their annual show and sale, kindly sponsored by Messrs Home Farms, Inverness & Messrs Craiglands Quarry, Fortrose.
Bullocks (15) averaged 250.2p and sold to 264.2p per kilo for the Craiglands Quarry Homebred Reserve, a 545kg Charolais cross from Skye MacGillivray, Glasstullich, Nigg Station, to Messrs McKenzie Craiglands Ltd, Fortrose, and £1,450 gross for the Home Farm Reserve Supreme Overall, a 595kg Limousin cross homebred from Donna Maclennan, c/o Mains of Clunas, Nairn to Mr D Budge, Brae-edge Farm, Castletown.
Heifers (10) averaged 248.4p and sold to 296.3p per kilo for 3rd prize homebred heifer, a 405kg British Blue from Drew Mann, Corrachie, Avoch, to Messrs R M Mackay & Sons, Greenvale, Dunnet, and £1,500 gross for the 2nd prize haltered heifer, a 570kg Limousin cross from Jamie Fraser, Tore Mains, Tore, bred by Messrs Hugh Mackay, Wester Tomloan, Ardclach, Nairn.
The judge, Jean Mackay, Harelaw Farm, Barrhead, Glasgow, chose as her Home Farms Overall Supreme Champion, the haltered champion and first prize haltered bullock, an 12 month old 510kg Limousin cross, brought out by Paul Wilson, Wester Cairnglass, Gollanfield, bred by Mr J Smith, The Rowans, Brora, and purchased at Dingwall in October. The champion was sold for £1,200 gross to Messrs G & S McConachie, Berrybrae, Wardhouse, Insch. Paul also won the award for ‘Highest Daily Live Weight Gain’ jointly with his sister Sarah, at 1.29kg per day.
The Home Farms Reserve Supreme Champion went to Donna Maclennan, c/o Mains of Clunas, Cawdor, with her first prize homebred bullock and Craiglands Quarry Homebred Champion, a 595kg Limousin cross, realising £1,450 to Mr D Budge, Brae-edge, Castletown. Donna was also awarded the prize for ‘Best new exhibitor’.
‘Highest Gross Margin’ was awarded to Daniel Urquhart, 7 Lilyloch, Muir of Ord, with his 505kg Limousin cross heifer, purchased for £600 and selling at £1380, a gross margin of £780.
