Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 9 April 2014 - Young Farmers Competition

DINGWALL, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd, (April 9th) sold 25 Young Farmers over-wintered cattle at their annual show and sale, kindly sponsored by Messrs Home Farms, Inverness & Messrs Craiglands Quarry, Fortrose.
Bullocks (16) averaged 246.6p and sold to 280.4p per kilo and £1,360 gross for the un-haltered champion and 1st prize un-haltered bullock, a 485kg Charolais cross from Scott Macrae, Shawpark, Glaickmore.
Heifers (7) averaged 232.9p and sold to 257.4p per kilo and £1,300 gross for the reserve supreme champion, homebred champion, 1st homebred heifer, and best from InverRoss, a 505kg Charolais cross from Donna Maclennan, 5 Tomich, Beauly.

The judge, Andrew Anderson, Smallburn Farm, Plewlands, chose as his Home Farms Overall Supreme Champion, the haltered champion and first prize haltered bullock, a 9 month old 555kg Charolais cross, brought out by Anna Wilson, Wester Cairnglass, Gollanfield, bred by Messrs Corriebheinn Farms, Portree, Isle of Skye, and purchased at Dingwall in October. The champion was sold for £1,350 gross to Messrs G & S McConachie, Berrybrae, Wardhouse, Insch. Anna also won the award for ‘Highest Daily Live Weight Gain’ at 1.40kg per day.

The Home Farms Reserve Supreme Champion went to Donna Maclennan, with her first prize homebred heifer and Craiglands Quarry Homebred Champion, a 505kg Charolais cross, realising £1,300. Donna was also awarded the prize for ‘Best from InverRoss’.

‘Highest Gross Margin’ was awarded to Daniel Gardner, Dingwall, with his 580kg Charolais cross heifer, purchased for £810 and selling at £1280, a gross margin of £470.
