DINGWALL, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd, (April 8th) sold 29 Young Farmers over-wintered cattle at their annual show and sale, kindly sponsored by A M Phillip Agritech, Messrs Craiglands Quarry, Fortrose, and Mill 'n’ Mix Ltd, Dingwall.
Bullocks (20) averaged 236.6p and sold to 297.7p per kilo for the supreme champion, a 440kg Limousin cross from Rachel Matheson, Ballicherry Farm, Balblair, and £1,320 gross for a 590kg Limousin cross from Euan MacIver, Upper Knockmuir, Fortrose.
Heifers (9) averaged 242p and sold to 284.2p per kilo and £1,350 gross for the 3rd prize haltered heifer, a 475kg Limousin cross from Scott Fraser, Tore Mains, Tore.
The judge, Robert Mackenzie, Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten, chose as his A M Phillips Agritech Overall Supreme Champion, the haltered champion and first prize haltered bullock, a 12 month old 440kg Limousin cross, brought out by Rachel Matheson, Ballicherry Farm, Balblair, bred by Messrs Achentoul Farms Ltd, Kinbrace, Sutherland, and purchased at Dingwall in October. The champion was sold for £1,310 gross. Rachel also won the award for ‘Best from InverRoss’ and the Craiglands Quarry sponsored ‘Best Stockperson’ award.
The A M Phillips Agritech Reserve Supreme Champion went to Jamie Fraser, with his haltered reserve champion and first prize haltered heifer, a 470kg Limousin cross, realising £1,200.
‘Highest Daily Live Weight Gain’ was awarded to Sean Macfarlane, Kinchurdy Cottage, Boat of Garten, with his 620kg Aberdeen Angus cross bullock, gaining 1.51kg per day.
‘Highest Gross Margin’ was awarded to Rachel Matheson, with her 480kg British Shorthorn heifer, purchased for £550 and selling at £1020, a gross margin of £470.
