Offshore Companies Named As Tax Avoidance Promoters - HMRC Warning

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has named two Belize registered companies as promoters of a tax avoidance scheme in the UK.   Minerva Services Ltd and Buckingham Wealth Ltd, who share the same official business address in Belmopan, the capital of Belize, were promoting and marketing a tax avoidance scheme known as the Umbrella Remuneration Trust (URT).

HMRC Collected £9billion Less Tax During The Pandemic

A report by the Public Accounts committee of the UK government shows the reduced amount of taxes collected during over the two years (2020-21 and 2021-22).   4000 staff were moved from compliance work to help deal with other work related to the pandemic.

Council Asked To Approve The Short Term Let Control Area For Ward 20

On Thursday 4 May 2023, Members of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee will be asked to approve the establishment of a Short Term Let Control Area for Badenoch and Strathspey (Ward 20).   Ward 20 may be the first area for Short Term Rent controls but is probable that other areas will follow so anyone renting property may want to study this report.

Developer Contributions on the agenda

Members of The Highland Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee will consider updated developer contribution rates for education and community facilities when they meet on Thursday.   Approval of the report will allow the Council to apply revised developer contribution rates for schools and community facilities in line with up to date construction costs and taking account of the latest evidence on the implications of housing development for schools and other infrastructure.

Highland Coastal Areas Threatened - Highland Council's Response To HPMA Consultation Highlights "unacceptable Socio-economic Impacts"

Members of The Highland Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee will have the opportunity to discuss the Highland Council's recently submitted response to the Scottish Government’s consultation on Highly Protected Marine Areas when they met on Thursday 4 May 2023.   In the response the council has voiced its strong opposition to the HPMA proposals due to concerns over potential significant socio-economic impacts that proposals may result in.

Price Inflation Likely To Have Peaked But Shop Price Increases Still At Record Highs

First Republic Bank is the third major U.S. bank to collapse in recent months

First Republic Bank has become the third bank to fail in recent months and the giant JPMorgan Chase will assume all of its assets, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.   The FDIC said the deal avoids the agency having to use its emergency powers and would minimize disruptions for customers.

One in four Brits plan to protest if the Government raises retirement age to 70

A quarter of Brits say they are willing to protest if the Government looks to raise the national retirement age, according to new research by pensions expert, Penfold.   A survey of 2,000 British workers, commissioned by Penfold, found that over two-thirds (67 per cent) of respondents disagree with the Government's plans to raise the retirement age, with one in four willing to take action and walk out.

Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB) has released official statistics reporting statutory debt solutions and company insolvencies in Scotland for the fourth quarter (January to March 2023) of the financial year 2022-23.   Scottish Statutory Debt Solutions Statistics for 2022-23 Quarter 4 There were 1,912 personal insolvencies (bankruptcies and protected trust deeds (PTDs)) in Scotland in 2022-23 Q4, 15 (0.8%) more than in the same quarter in the previous financial year (2021-22 Q4).
