NHS Highland Employees Inspire Young Minds

Health and social care workers from NHS Highland attended Inspiring Young Minds events in Inverness throughout November as a way to engage with young people and showcase the different job opportunities and education pathways available within NHS Highland.   The Inspiring Young Minds events, created by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Inverness & Central Highland, in collaboration with UHI Inverness and Skills Development Scotland.

Government Awards £45 Million To Maintain Flagship Scientific Research Vessels Including Rrs Sir David Attenborough

Industry and Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani announces £45 million in funding to maintain the UK's state-of-the-art fleet of research vessels.   Babcock International's Rosyth shipyard today has been awarded £45 million to maintain the UK's fleet of scientific research vessels - RRS Sir David Attenborough, RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook.

Unfair Treatment Of Nurses Deterring Students From Entering Profession, Says RCN

New UCAS figures show a 10% fall in the number of students accepted onto UK nursing courses.   The RCN says people are being put off nursing by the poor and unfair treatment the profession gets, often at the hands of politicians.

Priorities For The Scottish Budget Ahead Of The Announcment On 15 December 2022

Eradicating child poverty, transforming the economy to deliver net zero and creating sustainable public services will be the key aims of the Scottish Budget 2023-24.   Deputy First Minister John Swinney warned relentless prioritisation was needed to tackle the combined impact of high inflation, the ongoing economic consequences of Brexit and the UK Government's plans to reduce expenditure in future years, which are projected to reduce the Scottish Government's funding under the Barnett formula from 2025.

FCA Fines Santander UK £107.7 Million For Repeated Anti-money Laundering Failures

The FCA has fined Santander UK Plc (Santander) £107,793,300 after it found serious and persistent gaps in its anti-money laundering (AML) controls, affecting its Business Banking customers.   Between 31 December 2012 and 18 October 2017, Santander failed to properly oversee and manage its AML systems, which significantly impacted the account oversight of more than 560,000 business customers.

Final Posting Dates Brought Forward By Royal Mail Due To Strike Action

Due to the ongoing strike action by postal workers the last recommended posting dates have been brought forward.   The CWU has formally notified Royal Mail they plan to call on their members who collect, sort and deliver parcels and letters to take national strike action on Friday 9 December, Sunday 11 December, Wednesday 14 December, Thursday 15 December, Friday 23 December Saturday 24 December 2022.

UK Reaches Agreement On Key Fish Stocks For 2023

The UK has reached agreements with the EU and Norway, and wider coastal states, to secure valuable fishing opportunities for the UK fishing industry.   The UK has secured fishing catch limits worth £202 million to the UK fishing industry, a £33 million increase from last year, after reaching an agreement with Norway and the EU, Defra has announced today (Friday 9 December).

Pubs, Clubs And Shops Across The Uk Saved For Local Communities By £6.7 Million Rescue Package

More than 30 pubs, clubs, theatres and other venues at risk of closure have been saved and placed in the hands of local people thanks to £6.67 million of government levelling up funding.   Funding will help community groups take ownership of local institutions that have fallen into disrepair or are under threat of closure.

Sunak's talk of a £28bn cost of public sector pay rises is total CRAp

Richard Murphy (Social media accountant of the year for the fourth year running) has used his blog to demolish the Prime Ministers argument for not giving public sector workers the rise they deserve.   It is difficult to understand other than brainwashing why we hear these old arguments used by those in government and some private sector organisations that they cannot afford the pay rises.

Glasgow Engineer Banned For £100k Bounce Back Loan Abuse

Engineering firm boss had falsely claimed two Bounce Back Loans and used the £100k for personal gain.   John Gerard McGarvey, 37, from Rutherglen, has been disqualified as a director for 11 years after claiming two separate Bounce Back Loans totalling £100,000, and then using the money for personal benefit.

Registration For Short-term Lets - Timetable Extended By 6 Months

Extension applicable to existing short-term let hosts / operators Existing short-term let hosts / operators will have more time to apply for a licence after plans for a one-off extension were announced.   The Scottish Government has said it plans to extend the timeframe for the short-term let licensing scheme by six months.

UK Space Agency And Nnl Work On World's First Space Battery

The UK Space Agency and the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) are to collaborate on the world's first space battery powered by Americium-241.   This work, commissioned and funded by the UK Space Agency from NNL, will be delivered in a new £19 million laboratory in Cumbria equipped with next-generation equipment and technology.

Rail Signalling Deal Could Push Up Fares For Passengers

Hitachi's anticipated purchase of Thales' rail infrastructure business could lead to higher fares in future, the Competition and Mergers Authority (CMA) has found.   Signalling systems are used across mainline rail and urban metro routes - such as the London Underground - to control the movement of trains, supporting the safety and reliability of services.
