Supporting Low-income Workers

Self-Isolation Support Grant scheme pays out £73 million over pandemic and will end next year.   Low income workers who lost earnings when they self-isolated after contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19) have received awards totalling almost £73 million.

Scotrail Warns Customers To Expect Five Days Of Disruption During Latest Rmt Network Rail Strikes

ScotRail is warning customers to expect significant disruption during the latest round of strike action by RMT members of Network Rail.   The dispute does not involve ScotRail staff, however, it will have a major impact on the train operator's ability to provide services as the RMT planned action involves Network Rail staff in Scotland.  Network Rail RMT members are currently voting on a pay offer, which is due to close on Monday, 12 December.

Card Use Soars To 90% Of Retail Spending As Cash Payments Reduce

Today, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) published its latest annual Payments Survey.   The report reveals that in 2021, as stores closed for lockdowns and the public was advised to use contactless payments, cash usage fell to just 15% of all transactions (down from 30% in 2020), while 82% were made on credit or debit cards (up from 67% in 2020).

Name For Merger College Revealed | Ainm Na Colaiste Cho-aonaichte Air Fhoillseachadh

A NEW college for the North and West Highlands and Outer Hebrides will be known as UHI North, West and Hebrides when three UHI colleges merge.   Last month the boards of management at UHI North Highland, UHI Outer Hebrides and UHI West Highland formally approved the merger proposal and business case, which will see them come together as a single UHI college from August 2023, pending Scottish Government approval.

Dounreay's Robotic Collaboration Recognised By Time Magazine

A robot designed with help from Dounreay to safely inspect hazardous environments has been listed in Time Magazine's top 200 innovations of 2022.   The robot, known as Lyra, has been used to inspect ventilation ducts and feedback radiological information.

£50 million in Self Assessment payments made via the HMRC app

Families of loved ones killed abroad are to receive additional support at a time "when people need help the most".   The Scottish Government is providing grant funding to Victim Support Scotland which provides a specialist service offering financial and emotional support to families resident in Scotland affected by an overseas murder or culpable homicide.

Ben Hamilton, 34, from Middlesbrough, has been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, after being convicted under the Companies Act following abuse of the Bounce Back Loan financial support scheme in 2020.16 Nov 2022 ---------------------------------------------- Bankrupts provide false details to secure loans Bankrupts from Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent and South-West London handed bankruptcy restrictions after all provided false details to secure £165,000 of loans.   Nadia Butt, from Birmingham, and Dorota Suchocka, from Barnes, South-West London are subject to 11-year and 10-year Bankruptcy Restriction Undertakings, while Heidi Carruthers is subject to a court-imposed 8-year Bankruptcy Restriction Order.

Compensation Scheme For Postmasters Who Helped Expose Post Office Horizon Scandal Unveiled By Business Secretary

New compensation scheme unveiled for postmasters who were first to take legal action against Post Office over the Horizon IT scandal delivered by government and overseen by an independent advisory board, the scheme will enable these postmasters to claim reasonable legal fees Business Secretary Grant Shapps: "Today's compensation scheme will ensure that these trailblazing postmasters who did so much to uncover this injustice receive the compensation they deserve." Postmasters who played a key role in exposing the Post Office Horizon IT scandal from the 1990s will be able to access the compensation they deserve, thanks to a new funding scheme unveiled by Business Secretary Grant Shapps today (7 December).   In 2019, 555 postmasters who had taken the first legal action against the Post Office over Horizon received £43 million plus legal costs in a settlement.
