Bold, New Thirty-year Vision For Highland

Highland Council today agreed a bold, new thirty-year vision for the future of Highland to promote through the Scottish Government's new National Planning Framework.   Known as the Highland Indicative Regional Spatial Strategy (IRSS for short), it sets out the Council's ideas for how the region can prosper in the period to 2050 and also support the delivery of national priorities and outcomes.

Dingwall and Highland Marts Sale 3 September 2020

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts, (September, 3rd) sold 1,488 store and breeding sheep incorporating annual sale of HISHA accredited sheep and 656 on behalf of Lewis Livestock Producers.   Gimmers (389) averaged £130.74 (+£30.85 on the year) and sold to £172 gross for a pen of Texel crosses from 3 Balnabeen, Conon Bridge.

Google's new Digital Services Tax fee is another kick in the Googlies for online shoppers

Google's new Digital Services Tax fee is another ‘kick in the Googlies' for online shoppers, says ParcelHero Google has announced it is passing the cost of the new 2% UK Digital Services Tax directly to its advertisers from November.  The e-commerce delivery specialist ParcelHero says this means that, once again, it will be Britain's online shoppers who ultimately pay the price.

Public to be consulted on policy for rural housing developments

The Council will be inviting members of the public to participate in an forthcoming consultation on an updated draft ‘Housing in the Countryside Supplementary Guidance (HICSG)' which was approved for consultation by the Highland Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee today (2 September).   The upcoming consultation will provide an opportunity for people to comment on the planning policies that promote and direct future rural housing across Highland.

£4 Million For Technology Sector - Supporting next generation of start-ups

Five technology hubs will be established with £4 million to support the next generation of Scottish start-ups.   This initial funding, announced today by Finance Secretary Kate Forbes on a visit to the CodeBase technology incubator in Edinburgh, will invest in critical infrastructure, enabling the hubs to give entrepreneurs world-class training and mentoring alongside the chance to network and share ideas.

Flow from rest of UK to Scotland on the rise.   People moving from the rest of the UK have boosted the population in Scotland by 137,000 over the past two decades, according to a new report.

Inverness Has Huge Waiting List For Social Housing But Caithness and Sutherland have very low lists

The Housing and Property committee of Highland council at its meeting on 9 September 2020 will discuss housing issues including he waiting lists for homes Housing Demand There were a total of 7,785 ‘Housing' and ‘Transfer' List applications held at the end of 2019/20 compared to 7,890 in 2018/19.  Need for affordable housing does not appear to be significantly reducing.

HIE approves £3m support for tourism DMOs

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is to invest £3m over the next three years in tourism destination management organisations (DMOs) as part of the agency's support for the sector's recovery.   DMOs are formalised membership organisations representing local tourism providers, with many involved in regional level partnership working.

Deadline extended for comments on Cairngorm masterplan document

Cairngorm Estate owner, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), has responded positively to a request from stakeholders to extend the deadline, which was originally to be 31 August.   Deadline extended to 15 September.

£5m Precision Technology Project To Focus On Sheep Welfare Management

A £5 million research project involving nine countries - from Scandinavia to the Middle East - is aiming to revolutionise the use of precision technology in sheep and goat farming.   Led by Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), TechCare will be the biggest study of its kind for small ruminants and will focus on improving management of welfare as well as performance.

Businesses that meet the criteria will be eligible for both grants and a holistic business review with bespoke support based on their individual needs.   Carroll Buxton, deputy chief executive of HIE, said: "Hotels are at the heart of our tourism sector, which is central to our regional economy and a vital source of rural employment.

Welcome For Lerwick Port's Biggest Decommissioning Project Yet

Delivery of the 14,200 tonne Ninian Northern platform topside on Friday (28 August 2020) also marks the inauguration of a new, heavy-duty decommissioning pad at Dales Voe Base.  The facility has been developed by Lerwick Port Authority, with support from HIE, expanding the capability to keep UK sector decommissioning projects in the UK.

Inverness Castle Viewpoint Reopens This Week

High Life Highland has today announced that a popular visitor attraction in the city will reopen its doors to the public for the first time since 20th March.   The Inverness Castle Viewpoint, which allows for 360-degree views around the City of Inverness and beyond, will be back to offer birds eye views from 11am on Friday 4th September.

Rural Role In Green Recovery - £160 million investment for forestry and agriculture

Scotland's rural economy will be at the heart of the green recovery, Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said.   An additional £100 million was announced in the Programme for Government for Scottish Forestry to increase new planting, alongside £30 million to Forestry and Land Scotland to expand national forests and land.
