Video-consulting NHS Near Me Reducing Travel For Patients

Patients at two more Highland hospitals will be able to attend out-patient appointments closer to home thanks to the set-up of special staffed clinics using the latest video-consulting technology.   The NHS Near Me service at the Portree Hospital on Skye opened on Wednesday 19th December 2018 and another clinic based at the Lawson Memorial Hospital in Golspie, Sutherland, went live this week (Wednesday 9th January 2019).

A9 Berriedale Braes Milestone As Contract Awarded

Transport Scotland has today announced that R J MacLeod Ltd has been awarded the construction contract as part of the £9.6 million project to deliver improvements to the road alignment and the existing tight hairpin bend on the A9.   Michael Matheson, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity said:"This is a particularly challenging stretch of the A9 to navigate and this investment will improve road safety as well as minimise the need for vehicles to slow down or stop to negotiate the bend.

Man arrested in connection with "bogus workman" offences

Police in Lochaber can confirm that a 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with alleged consumer protection offences in Fort William.   It follows an investigation by Police Scotland and Highland Council Trading Standards, after a report was received this week of "bogus workmen" in Fort William and alleged fraudulent activity relating to charges for work carried out on a house in the town.

Completion of Caithness-Moray transmission link

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission (SSEN Transmission), the wholly-owned subsidiary of SSE plc, has completed the construction, commissioning and energisation of the new Caithness-Moray electricity transmission link.   Caithness-Moray is the largest single investment ever undertaken by the SSE Group and represents the most significant investment in the north of Scotland electricity transmission system since the 1950s.

Energy & Business Services: It was good to meet this week with a large company seeking to grow its presence in Caithness, and good to be able to provide some productive links with initiatives that HIE is already supporting and which might help further attract its interest.  We are fortunate in having a number of opportunities in the north in the engineering/ energy sectors and I'm particularly keen to help where there are clear opportunities to use innovation as a means of bringing more international trade opportunities to the area.

Less Favoured Areas Scheme

A commitment to maintaining Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS) funding at least at 80% in 2020 has been reiterated by Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing.   Following changes to EU law, industry bodies and key influencers were consulted on whether to move away from LFASS towards an Area of Natural Constraint scheme and the response was not to do so.

Average UK rental values continue to grow

RENTAL PRICES SUGGESTS RESILIENT SECTOR IN SCOTLAND DURING TIMES OF ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY.   THE average UK rental values continued to grow towards the end of 2018, according to the latest data from HomeLet, with December showing a continuation of the steady rise seen throughout the year.

Firms Secure £7.7m To Develop Wave Energy Machines

Two new Scottish wave energy devices will take to the sea in 2020 following the award of £7.7 million from Wave Energy Scotland.   Both winning firms - Edinburgh-based Mocean Energy and AWS Ocean Energy from Inverness - will use the funds to build half-scale wave energy machines and test them in real ocean conditions at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.

Animal Welfare Improved - Mandatory CCTV In Abattoirs

Legislation is to be brought forward this year requiring abattoirs to record on CCTV all areas where live animals are present.   This is intended to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare in abattoirs, by helping those responsible for enforcing welfare legislation.

Highland Council Analysis Shows £31 Million Budget Gap For 2019/20

DETAILED analysis of the Scottish Government's funding settlement, which makes up the vast proportion of the Council's budget, has been carried out and the net result is that the Highland Council will see a reduction in its grant funding to provide the current level of services.  This, together with the additional pressures equates to a £31.2M budget gap for 2019-20.

University Of The Highlands And Islands Welcomes First Cohort Of Midwifery Students

The University of the Highlands and Islands has welcomed its first cohort of students onto an innovative new midwifery course.  Nineteen students gathered at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness on Monday 7 January 2019 to begin the shortened midwifery programme.

Council advises businesses on how to spot and avoid being scammed

Highland Council Trading Standards have produced guidance on how to spot the signs of scams that target businesses and also remind businesses to inform their employees on what to look out for when dealing with unsolicited telephone calls, emails and texts.   All businesses as well as non-profit organisations (such as charitable organisations) may spend a lot of time dealing with potential scammers.
