The Highland Council is warning the public of the presence of an algal bloom at Loch Watten, Caithness. As a precautionary measure, environmental health have posted notices next to the water body, warning that contact with the algal scum or mat material should be avoided.

A new safety camera motorcycle which can be used across the country is being launched by The Scottish Safety Camera Programme. At a meeting on 31st August 2016 meeting of the Caithness Committee councillors had the chance to discuss the work underway to create a new community partnership in the area to support local planning arrangements. The Highland Community Planning Partnership Board agreed at their meeting on 30th June to establish 9 local partnerships across the Highlands, one of which will cover Caithness.
Calum Maclennan (18) from Alness took up the role of Highland Youth Convener this week and started the job by saying he was looking forward to spending the next 12 months working with the Highland Youth Parliament, Area Youth Forum and Pupil Councils in secondary schools across the Highlands. As the tenth Youth Convener, Calum will be based at High Life Highland's Head Offices in Inverness fulfilling the bursary position until August 2017.
Members of the Caithness Committee have agreed a set of strategic Council priorities for the area and confirmed their commitment to working in partnership with others to improve the health and well-being of local people. In the document, "A Vision for Caithness, Land of the Norse Yarls", the priorities are listed under a number of headings which include Infrastructure for Growth, Area Promotion, Health and Wellbeing, Transport, Education and Social Equality.
THE University of the Highlands and Islands has opened new student residences on Inverness Campus. Students are moving into the £6 million facility this week in time for the start of the new academic year.
The exclusive Transport Scotland drone footage reveals for the first time the advanced progress of a 5km section of the new M8 between Shawhead Junction and Baillieston Interchange, following a site visit yesterday by Mr Humza Yousaf, the Minister for Transport and the Islands. This newly constructed section of the M8 motorway will see three lanes of traffic travelling in each direction when completed, in addition to the two lanes in each direction available on the existing A8.
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP David Stewart has criticised the £50million spent last year across Scotland on private operations through the NHS. Mr Stewart points out Glasgow & Clyde sent 22,772 patients at the cost of £24,616,905 for private ops, while Grampian sent 1491 with a bill of £7,886,000.
WOMEN working in the television industry are more likely to be paid less than men, a survey - conducted by Future Thinking for Edinburgh International Television Festival – has revealed. Says the survey – ‘of 205 industry professionals' – it found that women are more likely to be on a salary under £35k (F=36 per cent, M=27 per cent), while more males report salaries of £75K+ (F=23 per cent, M=31 per cent).
Fishing groups across Scotland are set to benefit from £11.4 million of European funding to help deliver economic growth, Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said today. This funding is part of the first round of the European and Maritime Fisheries Fund and will support 65 projects across the country, enabling investment of up to £48 million in sea fisheries, aquaculture and processing industries.
A 24 point action plan aimed at revitalising Scotland's sheep sector has been unveiled by an industry expert group. The recommendations are contained in the final report of the Scottish Sheep Sector Review, which has been published today.
The new Civic Leader of Caithness is Councillor Gillian Coghill who takes over the role from Councillor Gail Ross. One of four councillors representing the Landward Caithness Ward, Councillor Coghill, who was appointed at the start of today's Caithness Committee, is delighted with her new role which is an honorary post and carries no remuneration.

Parents and carers of primary and secondary school children who are eligible to claim for assistance with school clothing for their children are to benefit from an 11% increase in the grant being made available by The Highland Council. Members of the Highland Council's Resources Committee have agreed to increase the amount of school clothing grant per pupil to £90 for all applications received from 1 April 2016 for the 2016/17 academic year.
The Redesign Board of The Highland Council is preparing to agree a list of functions identified for review. The Redesign Board, which is a partnership between Members and staff, was set up on 18 April 2016 to make proposals on redesigning The Highland Council, in the context of our new duties to involve communities more in local decisions and services affecting them.
