Amenity Grass Cutting Outsourcing Agreed

The Highland Council has agreed savings proposals for grounds maintenance following a detailed discussion at a full council meeting today (Thursday).   Earlier in the year, the Council agreed that a tender for routine grass cutting be issued to establish the potential level of savings to be gained from contracting out this area of service.

Council Develops Service Commercial Plots

The Highland Council to develop serviced commercial plots in Inverness The Council has awarded contracts worth £1.6m to develop 13 commercial plots at the Carsegate Industrial Estate and a further 8 on the Longman.   Work will commence this month and will be complete in the spring of 2011.

Review of Highland Education Provision

A strategic review of Highland Council's education provision and its school estate is to be brought before members of the Council's Education, Culture and Sport Committee early in the New Year.   Members of the Councils ECS Committee have agreed that a review of education provision will be undertaken and detailed proposals will be presented to them on 13 January 2010 for their consideration.

Young People In Highland Asked To Stand Up For What They Believe In

Young people from the Highlands are being asked by the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) to stand up for what they believe in and make a difference in their communities by standing as a candidate in the March 2011 Youth Parliament elections.   The Scottish Youth Parliament is a national organisation which provides young people aged 14-25 with a platform to represent young people across Scotland and an opportunity to influence politicians and formal decision makers.

Play Safe This Winter

With Scotland already experiencing harsh winter conditions, Scottish Water is reminding customers across Scotland that it's more important than ever that they play safe over the holidays.   Last winter seen the coldest winter in 30 years^ and Peter Farrer, Scottish Water's customer Service Delivery Director is concerned people may be risking their lives around freezing watercourses during this cold snap: "While it's important that youngsters enjoy their school holidays and that people across Scotland take pleasure in the country's beautiful lochs, rivers and reservoirs, it's also vital that they stay safe.

Health and Social Care Review in the Highlands

The Highland Council and the NHS Highland Board have unanimously agreed to progress far-reaching plans to integrate health and social care services in the Highlands.   Meeting jointly at Inverness today (Thursday), they agreed to develop a new model for integrated service delivery, which will further improve front line services, and help achieve better outcomes for the users of services.

Work Starts On Radon Testing Programme

In January 2011 The Highland Council is to start testing properties in the Highlands at highest risk from radon gas.  A programme has been developed following the publication last year of new radon maps for Scotland produced by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Met Office Weather Warning - Freezing Temps Heavy Snow

Tuesday 14th December 2010 and Wednesday 15th December Frost in places overnight and during mornings both in air and on roads, with the continued low level icy road hazard - due to continued snowmelt which refreezes at night, which probably continues to be a factor over parts of eastern England and over Scotland, though gritting should be effective with this.  A little rain in parts of the east too could lead to icy surfaces, this potentially turning to light sleet or snow for instance over SE England on Tuesday and Wednesday, though no significant settling is expected.

We require a building and adjoining external compound to provide accredited plant based training to our clients.   It is a requirement that this training is conducted off the job and in an area free from distractions.

Check All Empty Buildings for Burst Pipes

HIGHLANDS, ISLANDS AND NORTH-EAST ASKED TO HELP DURING COLD WEATHER AND THAW Scottish Water is calling on customers and property owners, including commercial building factors and landlords, to check their property for leaks or burst pipes.   We have mobilised resources to address any issues which might arise from the weather conditions and our priority will remain to ensure our customers are kept in water supply.

New chief executive appointed at NHS Highland

NHS Highland is pleased to announce the appointment of Elaine Mead as its new chief executive.   Ms Mead will take up the post on the 1st of January following the resignation of Roger Gibbins who has been chief executive for more than 10 years.

Wick High School Consultation

A joint meeting of the full membership of The Highland Council and the NHS Highland Board - the first of its kind - will be held next week to consider far-reaching plans to integrate health and social care services in the Highlands.   Both organisations are committed to improving the quality and reducing the cost of services through the creation of new, simpler, organisational arrangements.

Highland Council's toilets come top in the UK

Cleaning staff responsible for looking after The Highland Council's Education, Culture and Sport service toilets are celebrating after scooping 6 national category awards, 4 major national awards and taking home the top UK Trophy for the best Local Authority Entries.   The Loo of The Year UK Awards took place in Birmingham on Friday and the first results to be announced were the 2010 National Category Winners for Scotland.

Little Nippers Play Group Enrolments For Next Year

North Division Officers Receive Awards at Ceremony in Wick

Police Officers from North Division received awards at a ceremony at Wick Police Station on 25th November 2010 A total of 18 officers gained awards for long service, academic achievements and commendation for their efforts at a incident or event at the ceremony which took place on Thursday evening (25 November 2010).   Seven officers received their long service medals for completing between 20 and 22 years service, two gained their awards for academic qualification and a remaining nine were commended for their commitment to the service.
