The Highland Council is objecting to the removal of 151 of the 192 payphones proposed for removal in the Highlands by BT. In making its final response to BT, the Council has collated comments from community councils, community and voluntary groups, the police and individual members of the public.

The Highland Council has agreed to assume control of Caithness Heat and Power Ltd - an innovative wood-fired combined heat and power enterprise, at Pulteneytown, Wick. The Council has been a major funder of the company since it was set up in December 2004 and has stepped in with decisive action in an attempt to ensure a sustainable future for the pioneering operation.
Extra funding made available by the Scottish Government to assist the economic regeneration of Caithness, is being spent across a rigorous programme of activities driven by Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE). Twelve million pounds of additional funding was promised to the area for commitment to projects between 2007-2010.

BT is laying a new fibre optic submarine cable between Orkney and the Scottish mainland to help bring its 21st Century Network to the Northern Isles. The 70 km cable will run from Skaill Bay in Orkney under the Pentland Firth to Dunnet Bay, around five miles east of Thurso.

Industries and public bodies in Scotland are being given the opportunity to comment on a new scheme to assess compliance with environmental licence conditions. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is looking to streamline its compliance assessment scheme across four regulatory regimes and is urging operators of power stations, landfills and water & sewerage supply, fish famers and chemical manufacturers to comment on its consultation, published today (7 July).
Stagecoach in Caithness (formerly known as Highland Country Buses Ltd) celebrated the launch of 3 new coaches as they took to the road on Friday morning to operate on service 958 between Scrabster, Thurso, Wick and Inverness. The brand new coaches are fitted with CCTV and seatbelts, offering customers added safety whilst travelling on the service.
