Helping Clear School Meal Debt In Scotland

First Minister John Swinney has confirmed the opening of a £1.5 million fund to support councils in removing the impact of school meal debt from families across the country.   Mr Swinney said this commitment will help ensure no child is penalised for struggling to pay for school meals as a result of the cost of living crisis.

Ukaea Awards £9.6m To Six Organisations For Fusion Projects

The contracts were awarded through the Fusion Industry Programme to scale up projects dedicated to addressing fusion energy challenges.   The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), the UK's national fusion energy research and development organisation, has awarded six organisations with £9.6 million of contracts to advance their concepts to support fusion energy development.

New Laws To Be Introduced To Prosecute Dangerous Cyclists

The government has agreed to introduce new laws so cyclists who kill or seriously injure because of dangerous cycling, or who kill through careless cycling, face the same penalties as drivers and motorcyclists who do so.   Ministers have backed an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill, put forward by Sir Iain Duncan Smith MP, to introduce the ‘Offence of causing death by dangerous, careless or inconsiderate cycling, and causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate cycling'.

Rhoda Grant MSP Reacts To New Figures On Food Bank Use

Newly published statistics have shown that in the past year, 262,400 emergency food parcels were given out by food banks in Scotland through the Trussell Trust network.   From April of last year until March 2024, 86,000 food parcels were distributed to families with children, and overall food bank use remains close to record levels from the previous year.
