Record Number Of School Leavers In Work, Training Or Study in Scotland

Gap narrows between most and least deprived areas.   A record number of young people were in work, training or further study less than a year after the end of the school term.

Freeze On Cost Of 2023/24 Garden Waste Bin Permits

Highland Council Garden Waste Permits are now available to purchase for the 2023/24 permit season.  To help all customers to continue recycling their garden waste, the cost of a garden waste permit for the next season (2023/2024) has not increased and will remain at the same price as last year - £47.75 per permit.

The Number Of Payrolled Employees Increased By Over One Million Since February 2020

Early estimates for May 2023 indicate that the number of payrolled employees rose by 1.6% compared with May 2022, a rise of 460,000 employees; the number of payrolled employees was up by 3.5% since February 2020, a rise of 1,016,000.   Payrolled employment increased by 23,000 employees (0.1%) in May 2023 when compared with April 2023, though this should be treated as a provisional estimate and is likely to be revised when more data are received next month.

Drastic Shipping Restrictions Hit Drought-stricken Panama Canal. Expect Price Rises, Warns Parcelhero

The worst drought for 70 years has hit the Panama Canal, forcing today's strict new regulations that slash the capacity of some containerships by 40%.  New surcharges, rising costs and increasing bottlenecks will likely increase the price of UK-US goods, warns the international delivery expert ParcelHero.

Highlanders Aged 16 to 19 In Education - Applications now being accepted for Education Maintenance Allowance for the new academic year

All eligible young people are being encouraged to apply for a weekly, term time allowance of £30 per week from August 2023.   The Highland Council administers Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) in respect of eligible young people from across its 29 secondary schools.

Deadline For Voluntary National Insurance Contributions Extended To April 2025

The government is giving people more time to pay National Insurance contributions towards their State Pension.   Taxpayers now have until 5 April 2025 to fill gaps in their National Insurance record from April 2006 that may increase their State Pension - an extension of nearly 2 years - the government announced today (12 June 2023).

Dounreay Updates Information On Radio Active Particles Released To The Environment

An important part of the work to close down Dounreay is to address the legacy of radioactive particles in the marine environment around the site.   Particles are fragments of irradiated nuclear fuel discharged to sea as a result of historic practices in reprocessing.

Funding To Bring Down Outpatient Waiting List For Dermatoogy Appointments

A new national digital dermatology programme will be launched to help speed up treatment and reduce waiting lists.   By capturing quality digital images of a patient's skin concern when they visit their GP or primary care provider the programme will, where clinically appropriate, allow a senior dermatologist to triage, diagnose and assess some skin conditions without the need for patients to attend an appointment.

Scotland Marks Coronation Of The King And Queen - Service and procession in Edinburgh

Scotland will mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla during Royal Week in Edinburgh on Wednesday 5 July.   The King will be presented with the Honours of Scotland at a National Service of Thanksgiving at St Giles' Cathedral following processions on the Royal Mile.

Critical radars that protect the Royal Navy's warships against hostile airborne and seaborne attacks will be upgraded and maintained under a £270 million deal.   £270 million contract awarded to BAE Systems to support, upgrade, and maintain critical radars.
