Steve Bagshaw has been appointed to support work investigating the pro-innovation regulation of advanced manufacturing, one of the Chancellor's five key growth areas.   Following announcement at the Autumn Statement, the Government Chief Scientific Adviser is reviewing existing rules and helping develop a pro-innovation regulatory approach that allows the UK to fulfil its ambition to become a science superpower.

How Traditional Indigenous Education Helped Four Lost Children Survive 40 Days In The Amazon Jungle

The discovery and rescue of four young Indigenous children, 40 days after the aircraft they were travelling in crashed in the remote Colombian rainforest, was hailed in the international press as a "miracle in the jungle".  But as an anthropologist who has spent more than a year living among the Andoque people in the region, conducting ethnographic fieldwork, I cannot simply label this as a miraculous event.

Defence Chiefs Celebrate UK-France Military Relationship During Ceremonial Visits

UK Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and his supporting chiefs hosted their French counterparts, and over 100 members of the UK French-Military network during visits to ceremonial events.   The UK and France's most senior military officers have gathered in London to celebrate the importance of our military relationship, while attending ceremonial events including the Trooping of the Colour for the King’s birthday.

First Steel Frame Erected For New Facility To Protect And Preserve Army Vehicles

A steel frame measuring more than twice the size of Wembley football pitch is nearing completion at a new facility to support the British Army's vehicle and equipment fleet.   The Vehicle Storage and Support Programme (VSSP) at the Ministry of Defence site in Ashchurch will enhance the Army's operational readiness and future capability, through delivery of modern sustainable storage and maintenance solutions for its vehicle and equipment fleet.

NATO Ramps Up Support For Ukraine

NATO Secretary General: we must ensure Ukraine can defend itself now and in the future.   Opening a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission on Thursday (15 June 2023), Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Allies must continue to increase the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine as it fights to regain territory from Russian occupying forces.

Over 100 Arrested In Record Breaking Illegal Working Crackdown 

The Home Office deployed over 300 immigration officers on over 150 enforcement visits in one day to crack down on illegal working across the UK.  The Home Office has conducted a record number of visits targeting illegal working in one day, as part of a nationwide operation.   During the operation, which took place across the UK yesterday, Immigration Enforcement officers arrested 105 foreign nationals found working without the right to do so during 159 illegal working visits.

Mortgage crunch deepens with £15.8 billion repayments rise now on track to bite by 2026

Signs that inflation is proving stickier than expected have raised market expectations for how high the Bank of England will raise interest rates, with total annual mortgage repayments now on course to rise by £15.8 billion by 2026, and by £2,900 for the average household re-mortgaging next year, according to new research published today (Saturday 17 June 2023) by the Resolution Foundation.   Official data published in the last month - notably higher than expected inflation and pay growth in April (8.7 and 7.5 per cent respectively) - has raised market expectations that the Bank's rate-rising cycle, which began in December 2021, will continue for longer.

Fcvgen2.0 Ford - A Hydrogen Fuel Cell-powered Version Of The Ford Transit Van

The FCVGEN2.0-Ford project will design and develop a hydrogen fuel cell-powered version of the Ford Transit van, with the Ford Dagenham engine factory to be re-purposed for initial production of the vehicle.   By bringing the manufacturer, vehicle operator and supply chain businesses together, it aims to establish a business case for the wider rollout of hydrogen light commercial vehicles for E-Transit customers.

Circularity Scotland On The Brink Of Going Bust As Deposit Return Scheme Founders

Circularity Scotland - the organisation set up to run Scotland's Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) - could collapse after the scheme administrator said it had to send staff home last week and it is unsure if they will be paid.   Circularity Scotland, which is industry led and funded, was set up to be the scheme administrator for the DRS in Scotland, but after the latest delay saw the scheme pushed back from March 2024 to October 2025, question marks were raised.
