MSP Comments On Supreme Court Ruling Re Success For Companies Claiming Business Interruption

David Stewart, Scottish Labour MSP for the Highlands and Islands, commenting on the Supreme Court ruling in favour of small firms receiving payments from business interruption insurance, said:"I've been fighting to support small businesses who were initially denied their business interruption insurance pay-outs since the early days of the pandemic last year.   "This decision was long overdue, but it will be of huge relief to all those businesses across the Highlands and Islands which took out business interruption insurance who have yet to receive a penny.

Coronavirus (covid-19 Daily Data For Scotland - 15 January 2021

2,160 new cases of COVID-19 reported.   34,932 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results - 7.5% of these were positive.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards is publishing guidance to help businesses comply with changed regulations.   Following agreement of a trade deal with the EU, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is helping ensure business understand what is expected of them, including on issues such as the use of the UKCA marking.

Home building stats show sector is bouncing back

Support for all of those involved in the housing market and construction industry has led to an increase in the number of completed homes.   Stats released today show the number of new homes developers have started building have more than doubled compared to the previous quarter.

Ireland and Scotland publish Bilateral Review of future relationship

Review recommendations will enhance cooperation and collaborations between Scotland and Ireland.   The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, and Cabinet Secretary for External Affairs Michael Russell have today published the Ireland-Scotland Joint Bilateral Review Report.

NHS Test And Trace Reaches One Million People Over New Year, As Record Numbers Test Positive

NHS Test and Trace identified almost 390,000 positive cases between 31 December and 6 January ‒ the highest weekly figure to date.   A record one million people were reached by NHS Test and Trace contact tracers during the reporting week.

Schools Funding - More Teachers, Digital Devices And Support For Families

A new package of £45 million will help local authorities to provide support to schools and families as they deal with the challenges of remote learning during lockdown, Education Secretary John Swinney confirmed today.   Councils may use the funding - sufficient to fund 2,000 additional teachers - for purposes including recruitment of additional staff, additional digital devices or to provide additional family support.

Increase To Carrier Bag Charge

The minimum price of a single use carrier bag is set to increase from 5p to 10p.   The Scottish Parliament will be asked to approve the increase from the 1st April 2021.

All Highland young people & teachers gain vital mental health support in lockdown

In light of the recent announcements for Scotland's schools and the uncertainty of the months ahead, The Highland Council and Tree of Knowledge have agreed a partnership to provide mental health and wellbeing support to all pupils and staff across all 200 schools in Highlands, through remote learning and beyond.   From next week, all primary and secondary schools in Highland will have access to Treehouse; a groundbreaking online learning platform, for use at home or in classrooms, which addresses the challenges of the pandemic and develops positive mental health.

Pre-departure Coronavirus Testing Update

From 0400 on Friday 15 January 2021, passengers travelling to Scotland from outside the Common Travel Area must have a valid negative COVID-19 test result, taken no more than three days before the scheduled time of departure.   This will be checked by operators, and passengers with a positive test result or an invalid certificate will be refused boarding.

National Records For Scotland - Deaths Involving Covid-19 Week 1: 4 Jan-10 Jan

As at 10 January, 7,074 deaths have been registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate, according to statistics published by National Records of Scotland (NRS) today.   In the week 4-10 January, 384 deaths were registered that mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, this is an increase of 197 deaths from the previous week.
