The Scottish Government has begun its search for a new non-executive Chair of NHS Highland. NHS Highland Chief Executive Iain Stewart said: "This is a very exciting time for NHS Highland as we look to implement innovative ways of working to address the challenges we face.

The Scottish Parliament's Rural Economy and Connectivity (REC) Committee is seeking opinions from islanders on the priorities set out in the Scottish Government's proposed National Islands Plan. The Committee is today launching a call for views, which also invites comments from local authorities and others with an interest in island communities, to inform its scrutiny of the draft Plan.

A consultation on the introduction of a legally enforceable no-smoking area around hospital buildings has launched. The consultation paper asks for views on the specific details required to extend the existing indoor smoking ban to a set distance outside hospital buildings.

The notice of election was published on 23rd September and the deadline for submitting nomination papers has now been extended to 12 noon on Tuesday, 29 October 2019. Nominations are invited from people seeking election to all Community Councils across Highland this autumn.

Projects helping Scotland transition to a net-zero economy by 2045 can apply to be included in a new green investment programme, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced. The Green Investment Portfolio will give local authorities, developers and third sector organisations the opportunity to pitch for large scale investment to support projects reducing Scotland's emissions in areas like renewables, waste, transport and the circular economy.

Scottish and Japanese companies will receive £9 million from a joint fund to work together on innovative subsea technology. Combined with investment made by the companies themselves, a total of £20.9 million of industrial research and development will go ahead.

Highland Council's Trading Standards Team is urging consumers to check whether their tumble dryer is covered by a nation-wide product recall. Safety concerns affect a wide range of models and the manufacturer is offering a brand new machine at no cost to replace the problem items.

The police have told an MSP they are continuing to investigate crimes targeting rural businesses and are "concerned at the increase in dishonesties in a concentrated area of the Highlands". Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, contacted Police Scotland following reports that criminals were singling out small businesses in the region due to the lack of facilities to bank cash.

Drivers are being warned to look out for deer roaming on to roads and posing risks to road users. The warning comes with more deer on the move during the rutting season.
The Highland Council is supporting this year's Challenge Poverty Week, which runs from 7-13 October 2019. The Scotland-wide campaign led by the Poverty Alliance is designed to raise awareness that poverty exists in Scotland and restricts people's ability to take part in society.
