Consultation on extended opening hours for special events
The Highland Licensing Board has launched a consultation on whether to introduce a supplementary policy statement on extended opening hours for special events of national and local significance.   The aim of the supplementary policy statement, if introduced, would be to promote consistency of decision-making and to give advance notice to applicants of the Board's likely approach to determining applications.

Power flows to Scottish Renewables conference
Power technology leader ABB is to be the headline sponsor of Scottish Renewables' Annual Conference on March 24-25 - in the year the company starts work on both the £520m subsea Caithness-Moray power cable and the grid connection for Europe's largest tidal energy project off Scotland's north coast.   More than 800 delegates will flock to Edinburgh for the two-day conference, which this year features 75 speakers across 23 sessions.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (March, 4th) sold 433 store cattle, 10 adult head of breeding cattle and 43 OTM cattle.   Bullocks (262) averaged 257.5p and sold to 301.8p per kg for a 275kg British Blue cross from Dunmaglass Estate, and £1,380 gross for a pair of 660kg Aberdeen Angus crosses from Muirend Croft, Auldearn.

After many years of speculation about what would happen the the former Church of Scotland church at Bridge Street, Wick it has finally been given a new lease of life.   Planning permission has been granted by Highland council to Mr Graeme Bain of Wickblast to change the use to a furniture store.

Statement From NHS Education Scotland (NES) NES quality management visit, Caithness General Hospital.   NHS Education Scotland (NES) is accountable to the General Medical Council (GMC) for assessing whether doctors in training are in an appropriate training environment.    We carried out a quality management visit to Caithness General Hospital on Friday 13rd February to assess the quality of the learning experience and learning environment for postgraduate medical trainees in line with General Medical Council Standards.  The visit was prompted by a shortage of substantive consultants in post and continued heavy reliance on locums and therefore the potential impact on the quality of training and supervision of doctors in training.

A New Strategy for Scottish Land-based Education & Training
More than 9000 businesses and organisations are being consulted as part of a major initiative by Scottish colleges to understand how the delivery of land-based education and training may need to change to meet growing industry demand.   Land-based education and training up to HND level are currently delivered in Scotland through 18 regional colleges and national provider Scotland's Rural College.

SRUC Vets Appeal for Considerate Dog Control as Lambing Time Approaches
With lambing time approaching, vets from Scotland's Rural College are reminding dog owners to keep their pets under close control near livestock and to avoid going near sheep at all, if possible.  The vets say their role with SRUC means they see at first hand the devastation a normally friendly companion can cause to a flock.

The public are encouraged to take part in flood risk consultation
The first ever National consultation on the future management of flood risk in Scotland begins on the 2nd March 2015.  For a period of 3 months, the draft ‘Flood Risk Management Strategy', and ‘Local Flood Risk Management Plan' for the Highland & Argyll Local Plan District will be available to view, and the public are invited to provide comment and influence the future of how flood risk management will be carried out over the next 6 year period.

Poll points to SNP general election success, but lower Scottish turnout than referendum

LABOUR WILL OFFER ZERO HOURS STAFF A FAIR DEAL
John Erskine, Scottish Labour candidate for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, has stated his and Scottish Labour's commitment to ending the abuse of zero hour contracts.   This comes after figures released Wednesday (25 February) by the Office of National Statistics that show that from October 2014 to December there were 60,000 workers in Scotland on zero-hour contract in their main jobs.

Renewable energy potential
"Onshore wind success shows need for greater offshore ambition." First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is calling on the UK Government to increase its ambition to develop offshore wind.   Ms Sturgeon pointed to the fact that Scottish wind power is now substantially cheaper than nuclear, and said the lesson of the last decade of onshore wind development is that cost reductions require a meaningful long-term commitment to support investment at large-scale.
