Highland Council is to hold a series of Facebook chats on budget issues, starting with a discussion on the council tax.   For the eighth successive year, the Council has frozen the Council Tax.

Vets Advise Farmers to Investigate Ill-thrift in Ewes Now

Almost a quarter of ewes tested for Maedi Visna (MV) by SAC Consulting Veterinary Services are carrying the disease.  This could mean that large numbers of livestock are at threat of ill-thrift, failing to grow at a healthy rate, this winter.

Highland Council backs calls over maritime safety deficit

The Highland Council Leader, Cllr Margaret Davidson welcomed the call for reinstatement of ETVs by Highland MPs.   She said: "The provision of Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) has been a vital issue for the Highland Council ever since the ETV in the Minch was withdrawn some years ago.

Reduced price parking gives boost for city businesses

Two city centre car parks are to offer reduced-price parking for shoppers and visitors to Inverness City centre in the run up to Christmas.   Highland Council and Eastgate Centre Management have been working with Inverness BID and partners to provide a much needed boost for city centre businesses.

Beef and Sheep Producers Warned Of Low Protein Silages

SAC Consulting is warning that a significant proportion of beef and sheep will be severely short of protein with major consequences on performance.  Analysis of silage samples from beef herds and sheep flocks have been found to have disturbingly low levels of protein which could cause stock to slowly starve even through they might look full.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (October, 20th) sold 48 prime cattle.   Prime bullocks (18) averaged 206.2p (-10.5p) and sold to 214p per kg and £1,438.20 gross.

Planning Portal for Consultation On Planning Policies

Views sought on ­­Highland Planning Policies through new consultation portal.   The Highland Council has today launched three online consultations on planning and housing issues across the area, including a review of its main planning policy document the Highland-wide Local Development Plan.

Highland businesses snap up chance to be part of Broadband Voucher Scheme

In excess of 60 businesses in Highland have now successfully applied for free Broadband Connection Vouchers, providing a boost to their broadband so they can now benefit from new IT opportunities and better productivity.   The UK-wide scheme, which provides grants of up to £3,000 to help small businesses and charities on a first come, first served basis, has proved to be popular.

Highland Leader's response to business rates announcement

Commenting on today's announcement by the Deputy First Minister John Swinney, that Local authorities will be able to lower business rates in their area from 31 October 2015, Cllr Margaret Davidson, Leader of The Highland Council said: "Our ambition for Highland is to see much greater responsibility passed to the Council, as we believe decisions over local services are best taken at a local level.   "While I welcome this announcement, what local government needs is the freedom to be able to vary business rates up and down.

GP services go digital

£6 million to extend online booking and prescription ordering.   Over £6 million will be invested over the next three years to increase the number of GP surgeries across Scotland offering digital services such as online appointment booking and online repeat prescription ordering.

LMO payments begin

Farmers and other land managers will begin to receive their share of £6.7 million of rural development payments from next week.   Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead has confirmed the Scottish Government's Rural Payment and Inspectorate Division (RPID) has begun processing more than 5,000 Land Managers Option (LMO) payments for the 2014 scheme year.

Cereal harvest ‘better than expected'

Scotland's highest cereal harvest yield for 20 years has been welcomed by Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead.   According to the first estimates for the 2015 Scottish cereal and oilseed rape harvest, published today, Scottish farms are thought to have produced 3.3 million tonnes of cereals this year.

Contract awarded to deliver rail upgrade

BAM appointed principal contractor for the £170m upgrade of the Aberdeen-Inverness line.   The Scottish Government-funded enhancement will transform journeys on the route introducing a half-hourly commuter service between Aberdeen and Inverurie and additional peak services between Inverness and Elgin.
