Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead saw a little bit of history being made during a recent visit to Wick's Pulteney Distillery.   A 40 year old single malt has been launched by the distillery - the oldest whisky the company has ever released.

Science O3, the organising charity behind the annual Caithness International Science Festival, will be collaborating with The Highland Council Countryside Rangers to present a fun-filled family activity day at Dunnet's Seadrift Visitor Centre on Saturday, 29th September 2012.   The day of workshops, talks and walks, led by the Highland Council's Countryside Rangers, will highlight the biodiversity of Caithness and allow people of all ages to learn more about the wonderful world of birds, bush craft, whales, bats and basket making.

The charity which runs The Castle of Mey, the Caithness home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, celebrated the Diamond Jubilee and commemorated the 10th anniversary of HM The Queen Mother's passing by officially opening a new rose garden on Saturday 25th August.   The Diamond Jubilee Rose Garden, with flowers all specifically chosen by HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, is situated in the walled garden, which was a favourite place of Her Majesty The Queen Mother and her corgis.

Castle of Mey Celebrates and Commemorates with an exhibition of exclusive photographs and memorabilia "When I came here, I felt at once at home and among friends" *The charity which runs The Castle of Mey, the Caithness home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, will be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee and commemorating the 10th anniversary of HM The Queen Mother's passing by opening an exhibition of exclusive memorabilia and never-seen-before photographs.   Open from May 1st 2012, the exhibition will showcase the affection and dedication HM The Queen Mother had for Caithness and The Castle of Mey as well as displaying exclusive images and memorabilia from the 1952 Coronation.

Old Pulteney Prohibition Ball raises over £4,600 for Charity
Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch whisky is delighted to announce that its annual charity event, The Old Pulteney Prohibition Ball, raised over £4,600 for the local RNLI Station in Wick, Caithness.   The ball, which took place on Friday, 27th May 2011, commemorates the repeal of Prohibition in Wick and was held for the fifth time after its inauguration in 2007.

Old Pulteney single malt whisky has helped a separated Cape Wrath couple celebrate their reunion this week with a bottle of their whisky from their Wick-based distillery.   John and Kay Ure, who run an isolated tea room in the UK mainland's most north-westerly tip, were forced to spend the festive season apart for the first time in 35 years when the 'big freeze' hit in December.

As reported in July this year, The North Highland College (NHC) and The Wick Society formed a partnership to digitise the Johnson Collection, owned by the Wick Society.   The Johnson collection is an invaluable historical photographic archive in excess of 50,000 glass-plate negatives taken by successive generations of the Johnson family between 1863 and 1976 capturing the social and industrial history of Caithness, in particular the impact of the herring fishing industry.

Months of hard work have paid off for seven Highland independent museums.  Dunbeath Heritage Centre, Timespan (Helmsdale), Groam House Museum (Rosemarkie), Ullapool Museum, Grantown Museum, Gairloch Heritage Museum and the Museum of the Isles on Skye have all achieved museum accreditation, meeting the set of national standards for UK museums.

Monday 1 December is a significant date in the local calendar, as it marks the reopening of the Thurso Town Hall and Carnegie Library.  Magnificently restored, it now houses Caithness Horizons, an outstanding new museum and community facility for Scotland's most northerly county.
