Starting Salary: £12,595 in Year 1 rising to £18,191 in Year 4.

This programme provides unique and challenging opportunities. The people we train today will have the opportunity to be involved in some of the most exciting technical projects in the world and to develop skills which will be increasingly needed both at Dounreay and in other areas of industry.

Your Position:

The apprenticeship is a comprehensive training programme lasting up to four years. It starts with a year of Engineering Foundation training at ETEC, North Highland College UHI, Thurso followed by up to three years of training and work experience at Dounreay and other locations, with day release for academic studies. The programme leads to an SVQ Level 3 in an Engineering discipline and requires you to gain a Higher National Certificate in Engineering Systems.

Start Date: 31 August 2020

The training & qualifications you will gain are highly valued in modern industry; employment with DSRL on completion of the programme is dependent on Dounreay site requirements at the time and your performance.

Requirements:

You should:

Have achieved (or expect to achieve) a minimum of National 5 (Grades A-C) or Standard Grade (Credit Level) in Maths, Physics or Engineering Science and a Technical subject

For Electrical and Instrument Technicians there is a requirement to pass a colour vision assessment

Demonstrate an interest in Engineering

Live within daily travelling distance of Dounreay

NRS socio-economic funding supports 129 UK community projects

Almost £2 million was invested by Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) last year in socio-economic initiatives, supporting good causes in communities local to its 14 decommissioning sites.   The NRS socio-economic scheme provided £1,979,721 during 2025-26 to enhance the social and economic wellbeing of communities located near NRS sites.

Why Repaint a Building Marked for Demolition? The Practical Logic Behind the Dounreay Dome's Fresh Coat

At first glance, the decision to repaint the iconic Dounreay dome as it is a structure already scheduled for demolition seems baffling.  Why spend money maintaining a building that will soon be torn down? Why refresh the exterior of a landmark whose days are numbered? The answer is far more practical than it appears.
