HIE welcomes £94m expansion plans for Fort William smelter

18th November 2020

The plans were announced today (Tuesday 17 November) by ALVANCE Aluminium, operator of the Fort William plant.

Responding to the news, Alastair Nicolson HIE's area manager for Skye Lochaber and Wester Ross, said:"Fort William's aluminium smelter has been a cornerstone of the Lochaber economy for generations.

"These proposals from Alvance Aluminium demonstrate the potential for innovation to develop new products and target a range of markets in ways that could secure the industry's future for a long time to come.

"They also show how the smelter can be an engine of growth that creates jobs not only in Fort William, but in other parts of the area as well.

"We look forward to working with the company as it takes these plans forward."

Plans to manufacture aluminium wheels have been shelved due to the big changes in market conditions in the car industry due to covid.
