Highland Council Launches Trusted Trader Scheme to Support Local Businesses and Protect Consumers

Consumers across the Highlands can now make more confident and informed choices when hiring local businesses, thanks to the launch of the Highland Trusted Trader scheme by Highland Council Trading Standards.

The scheme offers a reliable directory of businesses that have passed a comprehensive vetting process, including checks on trading history, business practices, professionalism, customer service, and legal compliance. Only businesses that meet these high standards are approved for inclusion.

A key feature of the scheme is Trading Standards approval. Each participating business is rigorously assessed by trading standards professionals to ensure full compliance with legal and ethical standards—providing consumers with a clear signal of trustworthiness.

The scheme also includes verified customer feedback, offering genuine reviews from previous clients. This transparency helps consumers make informed decisions based on real experiences.

Additionally, all members commit to a strict Code of Practice, which promotes integrity, accountability, and high-quality service delivery. This ensures that consumers receive not only competent service but also ethical and responsible business conduct.

The scheme is already gaining momentum, with businesses from Aviemore to Tain proudly displaying the Highland Trusted Trader badge — a symbol of quality and professionalism.

Councillor Paul Oldham, Chair of Highland Council's Corporate Resources Committee, said: "The Highland Trusted Trader scheme plays a vital role in strengthening our local economy. By connecting residents with reputable, vetted businesses, we're not only protecting consumers but also supporting the growth of small enterprises across the region. It's a win-win—residents gain peace of mind, and local businesses gain visibility and trust within their communities. I strongly encourage residents to make use of this trusted resource when seeking local services—it's a simple way to ensure quality, protect yourself as a consumer, and support businesses that are committed to doing things the right way."

Thain Electrical Ltd, based in Aviemore, was the first to join the scheme.

Highland Trusted Trader Scheme is part of Scotland Trusted Trader, which is a collaboration between local councils, their council’s Trading Standards teams, Kent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Trusted Directory Services (TDS).

TDS is responsible for the scheme administration, customer service and website support.
