Career opportunities with The Highland Council

The Highland Council is looking to fill a variety of posts relating to civil engineering and flood risk management based in locations across the area.

Included are opportunities specifically for civil engineering graduates and technicians, providing the ideal job with career progression for anyone recently qualified and ready for a varied and interesting role.

The roles offer a chance for learning and developing skills, career progression and the chance to gain lots of experience working with a talented and dynamic team.

Based within the Council's Project Design Unit, the post-holders will be working across a wide range of work including the design of structures, road design and flood risk management - skills that are key to the future infrastructure needs of the Highlands.

The vacancies within the Flood Risk Management team include posts for an Engineer/Senior Engineer, a Graduate Engineer and a Technician, all to work as part of a team delivering the Council's Capital Programme of Flood Protection Schemes and fulfilling Local Authority duties under the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009.

The work of the Design teams includes producing designs, assessments, reports, drawings and contract documents for Civil Engineering works and assisting with the supervision of Civil Engineering schemes.

Vacancies within this team include an opportunity for anyone with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with Honours or a master’s in Civil Engineering or first degree in Civil Engineering with masters.

There are also 2 vacancies for Structures Technicians whose role it will be to assist with the inspection and management of the road network, provide technical support including minor design schemes and prepare and supervise maintenance works.

Someone with direct experience of career support and progression with The Highland Council is Senior Engineer Adam Sutherland who started working as a Trainee Technician.

He said: "I started working with The Highland Council as a Trainee Technician in 2005 joining straight from High School. Through experience, college block release and online learning I gained my HND in Civil Engineering. Alongside this I joined the Highland Councils ICE training scheme first gaining EngTech then IEng, I am now currently working towards CEng.

The support I’ve received from the Council has given me an alternative to moving away to gain qualifications, which is a common path for people from the Highlands. It has allowed me to stay in the region and gain experience whilst earning.

My work involves taking projects through inception, feasibility, design, and construction. I have a broad range of experience from new road schemes and streetscapes to landfill restoration and flood schemes with construction values ranging from £0.1M to £12M. In addition to the design office, I also have experience administering contracts and undertaking site supervision.

The Highland Council provides generous terms and conditions, good work ethic all whilst working with a great team".

The Council understands the importance of work-life balance. As part of its commitment to employee wellbeing, it offers flexible working arrangements and an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave and pension scheme.

All these opportunities are open for applications and full details can be found by visiting https://myjobscotland.gov.uk/
