Committee Approves Four Community Regeneration Fund Applications for Caithness

The Caithness Area Committee has on Monday 19 January 2026 approved four applications submitted to the Community Regeneration Fund (CRF), securing significant investment to support local projects that will benefit communities across the north.

A total of £258,898 has been awarded to initiatives that align with the fund's priorities of increasing community resilience, tackling poverty and inequality, addressing rural depopulation, supporting economic recovery, and contributing to climate action.

The successful projects are:

John O’Groats Development Trust - Development of Playpark at John O’Groats – £150,000

Caithness Voluntary Group – Caithness Rural Transport Community Hire Minibus – £43,500

Caithness Voluntary Group – Third Sector Support Officer – £30,758

Lyth Arts Centre Ltd – Caithness Artists in Residence 2026 – £34,640

These projects were identified as addressing priorities set out in the Caithness Area Place Plan and will deliver wide community benefits. From improved rural transport services and destination play facilities to enhanced cultural opportunities and organisational support for local community and third sector groups.

Co-Chair of the Caithness Committee, Cllr Andrew Jarvie said: "We are delighted to approve these applications, which represent a significant investment in our local communities. Each project will make a real difference – whether by improving facilities, supporting local organisations, or creating opportunities for residents and visitors alike. This funding demonstrates our commitment to regeneration and sustainability across Caithness."

The Community Regeneration Fund brings together Scottish Government funding streams, including the Highland Coastal Communities Fund and the Place Based Investment Programme, to support economic regeneration and sustainable development throughout Highland.

Still time to return Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council election ballots

Anyone eligible to vote in the contested Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council election is reminded that their postal ballot papers need to be completed and returned in the pre-paid envelope provided by 12 noon on Thursday, 8 October 2026.   Candidates standing were invited to submit a statement to support their candidacy and these statements are provided in the envelopes mailed out along with the ballot papers to all eligible voters.

Highland Council proceeds to procurement for a new electric Corran Ferry

The Highland Council has reached another significant milestone in the delivery of a replacement Corran Ferry, with the procurement for a new electric vessel.   Funded through a £58 million investment from the Inverness and Highland City-Region Deal, including £28 million from the Scottish Government for the new electric vessel, £20 million from the UK Government and £10 million from The Highland Council towards landside infrastructure, the project will deliver a modern replacement ferry service for one of Scotland's busiest single-vessel crossings.
