Referendum Agents appointed

Fifteen referendum agents have been appointed in the Highland area to act for the permitted participants in the Scottish Independence Referendum.

The deadline for applications was 12 noon yesterday (Thursday 13 August) and the assigned referendum agents will be appointing both polling and counting agents for the Referendum which takes place on Thursday 18 September.

Steve Barron, Chief Executive of the Council is the Counting Officer responsible for conducting the Referendum in the Highland Council area. On 18 September 299 polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm for voters to cast their vote.

For the first time, those who will be aged 16 at the time of the referendum will be able to vote. The Council is working closely with the Electoral Registration Officer, Highland Youth Voice, the Electoral Commission and the Electoral Management Board for Scotland to make sure that this new group of voters are given all the information they require to engage fully in the process.

190,000 poll cards have been posted to Highland voters. Anyone wishing to apply to be included on the register of electors has until Tuesday 2 September to submit their application. Electors may apply for a postal vote or proxy vote and all applications must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on Wednesday 3 September.

The count, which will be held in the Highland Football Academy, Dingwall, starts at 10pm on 18 September and both the Highland result and the Scotland result will be announced in the morning of Friday 19 September.
